ROUND
ONE -
RETURN OF THE GREAT WHITE
SARDINE! |
Fine & warm to hot
conditions greeted us at the opening round of the Massey for 07/08. This
time last year Jimmy stamped himself as the man tp beat with a win at
Cape Schanck, but not this year as he struggled at the first hurdle on
his tilt at a sixth Massey title to come in last with a net 89. However
the bigger story is that of the return of the GREAT WHITE SARDINE!.....
Yes Kenny Baxter breathed new life into the Massey competition with a
breathtaking net 66 to take maximum points for the first time since
round 1 of season 2000/2001 (Fusspots debut game). Gooey with a very
respectable net 69 came in second while Henry & Quinny also got off to a
good start to the season with net 70's in a tie for third. Henry smashed
the existing strokes record at The Bend with a blistering 77 off the
stick which was formerly held by Glenn with an 81 way back in 94/95. COURSE RECORDS:

ROUND
TWO - FROM CHOCOLATES TO BOILED LOLLIES! |
Another beautiful day saw
records tumble as three of our intrepid warriors broke the previous
course stableford record of 35 set by Jimmy way back in the summer of
92/93. As well as setting a new stableford mark of 39 points Henry shot
a course record 77 off the stick to better his previous mark of 78. At
the other end of the scale Kenny Baxter went from chocolates to boiled
lollies when he equaled his worst ever score of 23 to bring up the rear
following his first up win at The Bend....
Perhaps the story of day was Scoot's effort to shoot an impressive 37
points to tie Gooey for 2nd and while doing so upset the inform Henry 3
and 1 in their match and also record his best ever finish in a Massey
round. For some it is just as well we have 7 rounds this year or their
seasons may well be over already. COURSE RECORDS:

ROUND
THREE - LONG AWAITED MAIDEN VICTORY -
BUT WELL WORTH THE WAIT! |
Yes, another sensational day
for golf and didn't the scores show it - with five players bettering the
previous track record of 39 stableford points and Scoot bringing home
the bacon for the first time in his Massey career with a new record of
46 points which has catapulted him into equal 3rd place on the tally
board. Equal 2nd on the day with 43 points was Jimmy the Griff with a
welcome return to form and some much needed points, The Bean (now
outright 2nd) and Mike Hall who also badly needed the points. Henry
played as shoddy as he looked and finished last on the day on his home
track but still has enough points to keep in equal 3rd place overall,
while Gooey did enough to secure the outright Massey lead. All up there
are now ten players within 11 points and with four rounds still
remaining anyone can win!
A big thanks goes to our
host for the weekend David Murphy for his generous offer to cover the
costs for the round and his kind hospitality at Camp David on Saturday
night.

ROUND
FOUR - SCHOCKER AT THE SCHANCK! |
Benign conditions greeted
the Dewars Stableford Classic at Cape Schanck which should have seen
better scores - yet no one was capable of beating par, most particularly
on the back nine. However, Quinny managed to hang on and share a win
with Westy on 35 points. Scoot completed a trifecta of podium finishes
with 33 points while Gooey capitulated with his worst ever stableford
performance netting only 22 points to bring up the rear of the field
surrendering his Massey lead to Westy and Quinny with Scoot experiencing
his best year yet in third place. Meanwhile only 13 points separate the
top 8 players and with 3 rounds to go anything is possible .... WHO
WANTS IT?
The Dewars event was won by the group Westy, Glenn, Fusspot & Quinny
with 19 points losing the ball at the 12th tee. Who cares who came in
second! Westy won the individual Dewars award on a count back with the
best back nine.

ROUND
FIVE - STILL MATHEMATICALLY POSSIBLE FOR AT LEAST
SIX! |
Sensational playing
conditions once again this season for round 5 of the Massey at the
'Divot'. Where Q with a net 68 put a small gap on the other leaders, but
in doing so tightened in handicap by 2 strokes (about time I here you
all say!). Gooey also with a net 68 tied for first place to move back
into contention in 3rd spot overall. While the Mighty Bean came home in
3rd place with a fighting 72 to shore up 4th place overall some 8.5
points from the leader. Henry is still the main danger in 2nd place with
a net 73 finishing equal 4th with Schimma and Fusspot. Scoot made things
a little more difficult for himself with a last place net 86 to slip
back to 6th but still with a slim chance some 12 points in arrears and 2
rounds left on the final weekend.
COURSE RECORDS: Strokes - Henry 79 (prev N/A);

COURSE WORSTS: Strokes - Scoot 126 (prev

The Match Play
has now found it's semi finalists after a fascinating tie between Kenny
& Scoot saw The Bean get in the finals with a well deserved fighting
victory over Henry. Both matches went right down to the wire. This left
Scoot & Bean with exactly the same points. However, Beano goes thru with
the better "net holes up" and also defeated Scoot in their head to head
battle.
Match Play results:
Pool A - Fusspot d Jimmy
3
& 1; Kenny tied Scoot; Beano d Henry 2 up.
Pool B - Schimma d Mike 5 & 4; Quinny d Murph 4 & 2; Gooey d
Glenn 7 & 6.
Next round is to be
played at
either Portsea or Cape Schanck (Murph to book)
on Friday 7 Mar playing stroke. With the Final round at The Dunes on
Saturday 8 Mar at 8.32am. Ambrose or FBBB day is on Sunday 9 Mar at
Rosebud CC at 9.00am.

Baxter Tavern on Thursday night 6th Mar aroonud 8.00pm to discuss and do
the all important draw.
