FINAL -
NUMBER FIVE IT IS! |
With Murph and Mike absent and a 4.5 point deficit to make up Glenn
needed a miracle to capture his maiden Massey title. Well he didn't let
himself down as he punched his way to a remarkable net 71 under extreme
pressure to claim top points for the round. Schimma shot an equal
course record 84 strokes (72) and Scoot also helped out with a personal
best net 74. Gooey tried hard with a contribution of 76. He only needed
two more players inside Jimmys score but others like Beano & Fusspot who
promised so much the previous evening buckled under the pressure with 83
& 82 respectively. He couldn't even rely on Westy who seemed more
concerned with changing Quinny's swing (which looked better but
unfortunately not on the score card - 81) than posting anything under
90. Kenny recorded another course record 125 strokes and Jimmy the Grif
simply went about his business to pick up another 9 points with a net 75
as if knowing that was all that he required to seal Massey number five.
Glenn, gallant in defeat and without support recorded back to back
runner's up which is his seventh with Fusspot third overall.

ROUND
FIVE - SMOKIN' THE PIPE! |
Another hot day helped produce a pressure cooker atmosphere at 'The
Bend' where up to eight players still had enough of a chance to press
claims for immortality. Four unfortunate late scratchings took it's toll
on those hoping to make a last chance effort for Massey stardom as now
there only remains four with a 'mathematically possible' chance
following the pending scratching of maybe three players for the trip to
Yarrawonga. One of those four is sitting back on the couch smokin' the
pipe after setting up a very substantial 4.5 point lead and that man
knows from previous personal triumphs how nothing is impossible.... just
ask Jimmy himself about that 2 iron from the trees on the 18th on the
Murray course one memorable day!!
But...back to the bend and
all was not going that well for James after hangin in for a 50 on the
front nine and too his credit he lifted to produce a tidy 44 on the home
stretch. However, this day was to be Gooeys (net 68) who chipped in on
the last to pip Glenn (69) for the top points (Another quinnella for the
'Quick Pick') with Jimmy a further 3 points behind in third. Early
Massey leader Beano has drifted to 5 points off the lead after a net 78
while the unusually quiet Fusspot was attempting to sneak his way to the
title but a self confessed choke saw him card a net 85 to be in equal
2nd place 4.5 points of Jimmy the Grif. Unfortunately we can forget the
rest for this season as it is literally all over 'Bar the Shouting'.
See ya all at sunny Yarrawonga or Thursday night at the BT around 8-8.30
if you need to sought out travelling plans.

ROUND
FOUR -
RECORDS ARE MADE TO BE
BROKEN! |
Very hot humid conditions for the Dewars Stableford Classic which was
held for the first time at 'The Divot". Well they say records are meant
to be broken and during this round three players got off to a flyer with
scores in excess of 20 points on the outward nine but one in particular
was setting the world on fire... Murph and Schimma posted very handy
22's and even Scoot looked destined for his first under par finish
scoring a very tidy 19. These scores paled into insignificance compared
to Jimmy the Griff's majestic 26. Yes, Jimmy was "smokin' the pipe" over
the remaining nine with an 'easy' 18 points to set a new Massey
stableford record of 44 points to win his first "Dewars" and also take
the Massey lead. Murph laid a serious challenge but fell away over the
last few holes to card a 42, with Schimma 37 & Scoot 32 also falling
away. The weather took it's toll on the Bean with his joints blowing up
like a balloon and like the trooper he is he finished the round to
collect 2 points from his 19 stab. It's not worth writing about the
rest, although Fusspot did enough with 31 points to remain outright
second.
The "Dewars Team" event was won by Murph, Scoot, Gooey, & Quinny on 35
points with Schimma, Fusspot, Mike & Bean second on 33 and the others 31
(with Jimmy in their team - shame on you!!).
So it's off to Devil Bend for the penultimate round where there may be
more shuffling of places with the top three only separated by 2 points
and the next 4 separated by 4 points but at least 3.5 points adrift of
the break away leaders.

ROUND
THREE - THE HEAT IS ON |
With
smoke filling the skies from the bush fires raging in the High Country
and the temperature racing to a top of 43 degrees it became somewhat of
a survival of the fittest at Rosebud Public (Carrington Park). I know
yours truly definitely struggled over the last six holes as the heat
began to take it's toll. However, you wouldn't know it judging by the
scores carded in this Par event where only two players from a field of
ten failed to play to their handicap.
Glenn, with 40 off the stick on the back nine tied with Quinny for first
place on +6 for the day from an unlucky Henry +5 all scored on the
closing nine holes thanks to a blistering 34 off the stick. While the
mercurial Beano fired a respectable +4 to bring home enough points to
maintain a handy 3.5 point buffer over Fusspot who came in with a
respectable +2. But the big mover was Glenn who has now risen to
3rd place and only 6.5 points adrift with three rounds to play.
The next game is the
"Dewars Stableford Classic" which is scheduled for Friday arvo
19th January 2007. Murph is still negotiating a suitable course for this
not be missed event and the plan is to play a Peninsula course and stay
over at Scoot's holiday residence located in nearby Blairgowrie for the
night (many thanks Steve) enabling a safe return to our beloveds on
Saturday with the weekend still ahead.
Teams have been drawn in the traditional 'seeded' method and are as
follows:
1. Schimma, Fusspot, Mike and the Bean
2. Murph, Gooey, Quinny and Scoot (no water to worry about??)
3. Henry, Glenn, Jimmy and Kenny
In the mean time all the very best to you and your families for xmas and
I'll see you in the New Year!

ROUND
TWO - BEAN
SAYS CATCH ME IF YOU CAN! |
On
a day when everybody had there chances after the front nine... it was
Andrew 'The Bean' Sawyer who kept it together to post a record breaking
win at Amstel. In fact not only did Bean set a new course record of nett
68 but Fusspot & Gooey also bettered the old mark of 70 set by Henry
just last season. It was also the first time in four seasons since half
the field managed par or better, just last year par was good enough to
get you 11 points for the day! Anyway back to the man of the moment, the
consistent Bean has now scored a second and a first after two rounds of
the season and still maintains a healthy handicap of 30. Mark 'Fusspot'
O'Connor is doing everything right also to be only 2.5 points adrift
with a tied second place effort with Gooey to back up his first up third
at Cape Schanck. A further three points off is Jimmy the Griff on 17
points who would be a little disappointed to only get 5 points from a
nett 75. There were also commendable rounds from Mike, Murph, Glenn
& Westy who may be ruing some missed opportunities. The bottom four
of the day played in the same group with Scoot bringing them home on 78
and Schimma last with an abysmal 85!!

ROUND
ONE - JIMMY
CONQUERS THE 'CAPE'! |
With
very windy and sometimes squally conditions this was not the best day to
visit the 'Cape' if it was your first venture to a golf course in six
months. But one man came to play and didn't let the conditions beat him.
Jimmy carved out a very respectable stableford score of 36 points after
blazing out of the gates with 19 on the front. Jimmy now joins Gooey,
Murph and Henry on 15 round wins [refer playerstats].
Beano flew down the home
straight with 21pts over the last nine to be beaten by a nose on 35 and Fusspot
was consistent all day with a split of 15 & 16 to run a place with
31 pts (could this be his year!). However, there was some very ordinary
performances from some - but none as bad as Murph who apparently whinged
his way to an inglorious 18 points (inc. a massive 7 on the front). He
might as well have stayed home to watch his beloved Bathurst and spared
us all his moaning scoring only two points for his last place effort!
