ROUND  SIX   -   13th BEACH - UNLUCKY FOR SOME
This year saw us return to the Bellarine Peninsula & Surf Coast for the first time since 1997/98 when we tackled Queenscliffe GC on Swan Island and Lonsdale GC. However, this time we were playing a couple of beauties in 13th Beach for the final round on the Saturday and Barwon Heads GC on the Sunday in a new 4 ball-best ball teams format that replaced the traditional Ambrose event.

The weather was hot & sticky and about 30deg. for the final round at 13th Beach where all players seemed to get off the first tee fairly well with the exception of the leader Quinny who shanked his barely passed the ladies tee then proceeded to scramble up the first fairway... was this the chance for Glenn or Mike to pounce and take their first ever Massey? Murph was also a "mathematically possible" chance, but I never really gave him much fugn hope here anyway did anyone else??

Fusspot was back in form with a 44 after nine holes and Westy was in typical pro-mode with 40. Schimma was next best with a 46, Mike had given himself a chance with 47, Glenn 48, The Bean 49, Quinny a struggling 51 and forget the rest....

Fusspot didn't let a 10 on the tenth hole spoil his day by finishing the round with 94 off the stick and take the maximum points with a net 70 (put him back in the "Back Him - Don't Sack Him" basket). This would see him finish in 5th place overall and the first time unplaced since his debut season of 2000 / 01. While Mike came in with a net 72 (95 strokes) to finish equal second on the day with Westy (80 strokes). This enabled Mike to equal Jimmy's record of having two firsts, two thirds and a second out of five appearances in the same season but the tie with Westy would see him finish only 0.5 point less than Jimmy did in 2002 / 03, where he won with two points to spare having missed a round.... would this also be enough for Hally??

Glenn and Quinny were the ones he had to catch. The latter was having a consistent but unspectacular round and had probably done enough to hold on when confronted with another difficult tee shot on the last. This resulted in the inevitable "choke" and " three off the tee" to finish with a 9 and keep the door ajar with a net 78 (106 strokes). Glenn was traveling reasonably well enough to make up the two points he required but an 8 & 7 on 13 & 14 respectively meant he also had to settle with a net 78.  So Mike only required the other cards to fall into place, but had to rely on some of the high profile players such as Wiseman, Murphy & Griffiths to finish with mid 70's. However, only The Bean could record a score good enough to help while some of the others were too busy complaining about some "goat track". However, undiscovered tribes of the Amazon Jungle could tell you that what they were really doing was sand bagging for next years handicaps. In particular Murph and Schimma who carded record worst nets of 92 and 96... Fugn Cheats!! While Kenny rattled up a record 135 strokes.... breaking his record of 134 set at Carrington Park in the inaugural Massey year (remember... the one which included the 17 shots to get out of the bunker on 17!)

And so a fortunate and thankful Ian Quinton found himself crowned the Massey King for a third time in six years in some what of a hollow victory since Michael had achieved what Jimmy did just three years earlier only to place a creditable third. Just 3 points from possible victory but it took the highest ever winning score in the current 6 round format to beat him. Glenn too, can consider himself unlucky, as just three shots less would have seen him force a play-off or three shots more to IQ alone would have been enough for Glenn to win outright! Alas, it was to be his sixth Massey runners up.

Ahh the 'if's and buts' of golf!

The new teams event this year was a four ball - best ball pairs event played at the magnificent Barwin Heads GC on the Sunday. Glenn & Jimmy added to their tally of Sunday victories with 54 points, closely followed by Fusspot & Schimma on 53 while  Kenny 'The Driver' & Quinny were third on 49. Others were Henry & Mike 46, Murph & Schimma 46 and Bean & Scoot 44.

ROUND  FIVE   -   AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR!
Near perfect conditions saw only a field of eight for this penultimate round of 2005 / 2006 when unfortunately Mike, Gooey, Scoot & Henry were unable to attend. Standing on the first tee Murph, Glenn & Quinny new what had to be done to take advantage and overhall Mike 'The Leader' Hall. But it was still all before them as only Glenn was able to hold it together and square the first hole. After six holes Murph had recovered to be all square while Glenn 2 down and Quinny 4 down were staring at possible disaster. However, save after save over the back nine with some loooong putts & gritty never say die golf saw all three trifecta the round and leave the rest in their wake. Of the others Schimma (+1) Beano (square) and Kenny (-1) after nine holes were in winnable positions with the exception of Jimmy (4 down) and Fusspot (7 down) who were struggling at best.

This was to be Glenn's first win in a round of the Massey since Flinders 2002 / 2003 which saw him trim 4 shots off his handicap (15.1) and it has taken until this year to see him back in contention and now seriously challenge for a long awaited first ever Massey Championship.

Murph's 2nd placing has enabled him to catch Mike while Quinny (equal 2nd) has escaped with the outright lead only two points clear of Glenn and 6 points clear of both Mike & Murph who are the only others who are still in the hunt for the Holy Grail.

These three can consider themselves very lucky due the unfortunate absence of the man formerly known as Michael 'The Leader' Hall. However, he is still in a position to reverse the tables on Quinny after dramatically throwing away a 5 point lead to hand him the trophy by a mere 0.5 of a point in 2003 / 2004 at Yarrawonga. Murph too is not out of it, just ask him! In fact he is so confident that he must now be considered the overwhelming favourite. Or can Glen 'The Cinderella Man' Martin avoid the Barwon Heads chicken schnitzel and finally get his name engraved on the trophy??

This round saw another Quinella for Quick Pick followers. While Jimmy & Fusspot have gone into the "sacked - never to be backed" basket for the time being!

ROUND  FOUR   -   STORMY PROCEEDINGS AT PATTO
Very hot & windy conditions greeted our heroes at the "Dewers Stableford Classic" at Patterson River Country Club but there was worse to come as the change approached. The inevitable thunder storm struck a severe blow on the back nine when we were forced to take refuge from the electric atmosphere with only 3 to four holes left to play. Two groups took shelter on the course ( it was a long way back to the clubhouse) while the middle group completely through in the towel and ran for their lives (or so they would tell us) and sought the comfort of the clubhouse and subsequently called it a day with the general opinion that any further play would be too dangerous (their sexuality was subsequently placed into question). However, the two remaining groups completed the final holes, when in their opinion, the storm had passed. Realising that a replay would be difficult to arrange and that there was still the possibility to complete the round in a little over 45 minutes.

Later at the bar, there was much debate over whether the round should stand, be replayed or even cancelled etc. It was finally agreed (but it should be said - not by all) that the round should count and that there was enough opportunity to complete play.

I think we all agree that it was an unfortunate set of circumstances that is subject to individual opinion.

The event of a wash out or stoppage due to lightening will happen again and we should look at creating a policy of what constitutes a game like they do in ODI cricket. i.e. completion of nine holes minimum is a game etc. All groups must confer (possibly by phone as a minimum) and an agreement reached on whether to re-start play or not. In this instance if we had agreed not to continue then the 14 completed holes (by all groups) would have been the final score and all handicaps could have been adjusted accordingly to 18 holes etc. By doing something like this then no one would have a known disadvantage. What do we think???

In any case Quinny was declared the undisputed winner after a course record equalling 38 stableford points as we now have only four players within 10.5 points of the lead with Mike holding sway by 4.5 points over Ian Quinton with Glenn "The Cinderella Man" Martin 8 points off the pace and Murph a further 2.5 points adrift of him.

The team of Murph, Glenn, Quinny & The Bean took out the "Dewers Stableford Classic" by simply keeping their ball alive until the 10th hole and gratefully received winners prizes courtesy of Jimmy & BacardiLion.

And so it's off to fabulous Flinders where a large turn around in scores will be required to bring others back into contention.... but you never know in the Massey!

ROUND  THREE   -   STORMY RETURN TO AMSTEL
Thunder, lightening, tempest & flying rescue clubs (perhaps that should read "temper") greeted us for our first game at Amstel since 92/93 as Michael "Amstel" Hall consolidated his lead with a respectable one over par round. Amstel lived up to it's previous reputation where only Henry & Jimmy were able to match or better par. Gooey was on target to better his all time worst round of 125 (nett 100) which he picked up on this very track 12 years ago... with 62 strokes on the front nine. However, he did well to recover and come back in with 46 on the back. While Kenny notched up another last finish by scoring 15 on the par three 12th where he was seen teeing off for 11! A frustrated Fusspot hoiked his rescue club with a mighty swing only to see it boomerang into the murky depths of the dam adjacent the 17th as he now lies a massive 20 points behind the leader. Jimmy, Glenn, Quinny & Murph just managed to keep in touch with some handy points in the top half of the field. The rest including last year's winner are languishing with a lot of work ahead of them.

Henry created another track record with his nett 70 (78 strokes) to pull off a three shot victory,  to join Murph & Gooey on 15 career wins.  See |

Followers of the "Quick Pick" would have been ecstatic at yet another boxed trifecta... it's not too late to subscribe to this amazing tipping service.. but you'd better be quick "early mail" membership is filling up fast and will not be over subscribed in order to preserve precious high returns.

It's now off to Patto River for the "Dewars Stableford Classic" which is looming as a last chance for many to keep within striking distance of our leader. The groups have been drawn as follows:

  • Henry, Michael "Stableford-Patto River" Hall, Fusspot & Scoot
  • Schimma, Gooey, Jimmy, Kenny
  • Murph, Glenn, Quinny & The Bean

ROUND  TWO   -   SEVEN BEAT PAR AS MIKE & MURPH SIZZLE
The weather set the scene for some low scoring as seven players beat par and Mike & Murph sizzled with net 61's to head the Massey table. Murph hit a personal best 76 off the stick which would have been a new course record if not for Schimma's 75 (nett 66) which was only good enough to give Ray 5th place for the round. There was solid contributions from Glenn & Beano with 65's while Fusspot, Jimmy, Scoot and Kenny were the only ones over par on a glorious day that could not possibly hold any excuses for the shit golf they played!!

Beano & Kenny were granted a new maximum handicap of 32 for the season which Beano took good advantage of by beating the handicapper by the those two extra strokes. But they could only be regarded as a token gesture for Kenny as he recorded yet another last finish.

Mike's back to back wins in the first two rounds is the best start to a Massey season since Murph's 2nd and two 1sts from the first three rounds in 1999/2000. It should be interesting at Amstel where we once again play a stroke competition with Mike & Murph dropping a whopping 4.5 off their handicaps. Hopefully this will create a bunching up of the scores as we get into the 'nitty gritty' of the season.

ROUND  ONE   -   THE RETURN OF MICHAEL 'STABLEFORD' HALL!
The weather was not kind as rain squall after rain squall gave us a bit of a soaking at times throughout play and the fairways held some casual water. The Devil Bend course coped fairly well in the inclement conditions but alas, some of our Massey hero's didn't fair so well, as only one single man was able to match par and that man was Michael 'Stableford' Hall. As tipped in the Quick Pick - Mike was an each way special playing off 27 in the first round stableford format. His card shows that he had a very consistent round of 17 points going out and 19 back in, which included three 4 pointers all on par 4's. Too bad we don't play stableford all the time Mike!

Gooey Quinny & Glenn didn't realise how close their scores were while playing in the same group when they filled the next three places. While Beano, Fusspot & Kenny are bringing up the rear but have plenty of time to make up ground. Defending champion Ray Wiseman was absent while carrying out other commitments which were made believing the game was on the following weekend and receives zero points for his stupidity. Why Oh Why do I bother providing all the info on a web site???
