ROUND  ONE   -   JIMMY "TEES OFF" AND WINS EEEASING UP!
Jimmy's first tee shot in the 20th Massey was an absolute cracker and he never looked back from there, carding a magnificent 22 points on the longer front nine. Then iIt appeared as though he threw out an anchor big enough to pull up the Queen Mary when teeing off for three and taking drops over the last few holes. If this was his intention then he did it to perfection pulling up the big ship up within a 'poofteenth' of Station Pier to finish on 39 stableford points and take the round by a solitary point. This being Jimmy's 14th round win to move into equal 2nd on the all time round winners table.

For all those sceptics out there the "QuickPick" could have helped you find the trifecta with 'Track Lovers' listing the local lad - Henry who finished second with 38 points and also tipped "Don't discard Jimmy with 8 placings from 12 starts". Add to that the new kid on the block "Schimma" Wiseman as the "Roughie" who finished in third place with 37 points! Not bad hey! The only disappointment was the "Verdict" tipping the mighty Bean whose 29 points was only enough to increase Kenny's mortgage on the all time last placings table.

Gooey, Fusspot and Murph picked up handy points in the upper half of the field, while the rest have a little work to be done at Traf to keep in contention.

A pleasant BBQ with some venison courtesy of The Hunter and some frothies to finish proceedings capped of another sensational opening days play at the "Massey".

 ROUND  TWO   -   BONUS POINTS!
With Henry, Murph, Scoot & Mike "Stableford" Hall missing from this round it was a chance for some easy points today. Just ask Jimmy and Schimma who both thought they had ordinary days but were pleasantly surprised by what came out in the wash. However, it was Quinny's day at Traf again this year when he came home with three pars in a row on the back nine (which was in fact the front!) to record the only par score or in fact the only score any where near par!!! Ray held on for second with a nett 76 closely followed by Glenn with a 77and you could throw a blanket over the rest who all had to settle for scores from 79 to 80 with Kenny pulling up the rear for his 27th last placing on 81. Ray Wiseman now has the outright lead in his debut Massey season with Jimmy breathing right down his neck.

But undoubtedly the highlight of the day was Jimmy's home made "Superburgers" complete with buttered rolls, cheese, eggs, lettuce, onions, onions and more onions. Simply "MAAAAGNIFICENT".

With a bit of luck, hopefully we will see a full field at Patto in January for the Johnnie Walker Classic or is it now the Bacardi-Lion Invitational??? Where some very valuable points are required by most of the field to get back into contention prior to "The Big Hit" in Tassie.

A preXmas hit is being mooted for anyone interested - keep posted on the forum page for more about this if it gets up.

ROUND  THREE   -  JOHNNIE WALKER  CLASSIC
A full compliment came out to play on this warm & sunny Friday afternoon to test their skills at the fully revamped Patto River. Glenn was even dropped off on the way home from Echuca as there was more than just Massey points at stake -  for this is the Johnnie Walker Classic - and it is even moving into new sponsorship. The added challenge of this prestigious team event, now in it's third year produces the sought of desperation never quite seen before on the playing fields of the Massey.

Our first intrepid group consisting of Schimma, Jimmy, Quinny & Kenny got off to a handy start when captain Schimma par'd for the first 2 stableford points of the day. However, this promising beginning quickly turned sour when VC Jimmy topped his tee shot and Johnnie plunged into the murky depths of the tee side water hazard. Their hopes lifted when the second group of Henry, Murf, Beano & Scoot were seen searching frantically for Johnnie #2 which disappeared off the back of the first green - "We might win this with 2 points" said a hopeful Kenny. But their ball was soon found, which astonishingly prompted Kenny  to discard shoes, socks & then also his strides! Was there a superman outfit underneath? Unfortunately not, but in a single bound he plucked out a ball with the help of his trusty wedge. Alas, it was not our beloved Johnnie. But Kenny was not beaten yet, he could see little Johnnie perched  precariously just a further 10 inches away (which converted to about another 3 feet in depth) - off came the shirt and standing proud wearing only his pair of jocks (or his only pair of jocks?)- he puffed out his chest and drew his breath in readiness - Yes, the heroic duck dive was imminent......

Just then, a horrified David Murphy approached the tee and pleaded with Kenny to " just get the fuck out of there NOW!" Kenny headed this timely advice just prior to the unsuspecting coarse manager appearing with camera in hand to take some happy snaps around his once "virgin like" water hazard.  WHEW!! Murf keeps his membership intact and Oh well - it was back to individual honors for this group which consisted of three of the Massey points leaders, it was probably going to be played out individually anyway Kenny - but it was a brave attempt none-the-less.

This was not going to be the only act of desperation for Johnnie Walker glory.... Unscrupulously, but sadly not out of character, having accumulated an already substantial 27 Johnnie points in the first 10 holes.... Henry & Murf suggested that Scoot pick up the Johnnie ball and accept zero points when it was his turn on the 11th tee. This, after completing his best ever Massey score for 9 holes (22 points), many of which contributed towards the team score and possibly heading to his maiden Massey round win. Can you believe it!!!

Scoot was not going to be ridden rough shod by this pair of desperado's and, with much pride, he decided to play out his hole. Alas, poor Johnnie did not survive the tormented tee shot. Well, what else would you expect? Who wouldn't be shaken by such a vote of "no confidence"? I can just hear their insipid howls of derogatory undertones emanating from their dropped jaws - gems like "I told you so" and "I knew it" among other clever retorts!  Well..... Serve ya selves fucking right fellas! The immortal John Lennon once sung something about "Instant Karma"...

and how appropriate it was that the 3rd struggling group of Glenn, Fusspot, Gooey and the man formerly known as Michael "Stableford" Hall (18 points total)  survived for 17 grueling holes and only through shear teamwork and a never say die attitude (they probably never thought of asking Mike to accept a wipe!)  to scramble out 28 points and take out this "team" I repeat TEAM! event by one solitary point.

Enough to make you cry isn't it Murf? I could not "imagine" (there's John Lennon again!) a punishment more befitting your heinous exhibition of poor sportsmanship.

That's enough of Massey merriment for now - it's onto the business end of the season and Henry adds to his impressive CV with his first Johnnie Walker Individual and after playing only two of three rounds (2nd & 1st) is within easy reach of the leaders. While Glenn, Fusspot & Mike collect there first JW team win, Gooey now has two - looks like you need a new JW shirt too!

This round has leveled out the race for the Massey crown with nine players within 10 points of the lead still held by Schimma and still three rounds to go.

On behalf of my fellow Massey brethren a big thanks to Mr & Ms Murf for hosting and catering this event & aftermatch BBQ.

ROUND  FOUR   -   THE BEAN STRIKES BACK
The grand old lady of the Massey hit back today and has truly stood the test of time, as the south westerly winds made golf very difficult on an otherwise sunny afternoon. But one man came out to play after a solid session warming up in the Flinders Pub . Only the man formerly known as Michael 'stableford' Hall was unfortunate enough not to witness the heralded return to form of 'Beano' - who registered his first Massey round victory since Round One at Trafalgar on 23 September 2001 / 2002 season. The "Quick Pick" had been tipping this for some time now - but unfortunately not today. Bean never hit a bad one - only dropping 2 holes for the day.

The field has really tightened with eight players within 8.5 points for the lead. Only 2.5 points separate Quinny, Schimma & Jimmy at the top - 1 point separates Glenn (4th), Fusspot (5th) and Beano (6th) with disappointing rounds coming from Westy and Murph leaving them 8.5 & 14 points off the pace respectively. You can 'stick a fork' in Scoot, Kenny & Mike for this year - because they are done like a dinner!

ROUND  FIVE   -   TASMANIA MANIA!
A beautiful day beckoned in the land of Baldock, Stewart & Hart as our intrepid eleven set off for Tulla in the wee hours of this Friday morn. Everyone arrived on schedule and boarded the plane with a level of excitement  unmatched on any previous Massey weekend! The two fat boys met us at the "Hobart International Airport" without too much delay. However, Scoot was conspicuous by his absence after he spotted the Tasmanian Sniffer Dog training his fine tuned nose over our luggage. Then it was onto the team bus and off to the Customs House Hotel on the water front to check the beer lines only seven minutes behind Jimmy's schedule of 10.05am. Once checked in it was back on the bus for the "short" trek to Tasmania Golf Club via the odd round-about or two and a Cook's tour of Seven Mile Beach... Thanks Mark & Jimmy!!

Some nervous shots off the first tee & the Massey was on for young & old. Schimma, thanked his lucky stars as he teed off with two provisional balls that looked well & truly gone - only to find the first ball and compose himself with a birdie start - what could have been! The course lived up to it's reputation of being long & tight which took it's toll on most except for Fusspot (net 69), Schimma (70) and Henry (71). Massey leader Quinny played like a spazzie at Tassie with a nett 87 while Kenny racked up a great knock of 121 NO for net 91.

So Schimma picks up an handy buffer of 2 points over Fusspot with Glenn & Quinny a further 6 points in arrears with Jimmy, Henry & Beano the only other rough chances to win at Claremont on Saturday.

The touring party then made it's way to a pub in trendy Hobart South via Strutties House for a satisfying meal then tried their luck at Wrest Point before a short sleep and breakfast back at Customs House Hotel.

 ROUND  SIX   -    CLAREMONT CONTROVERSY!
After breakfast a nice stroll through the Salamanca Market was the order of the morning, before departure to Claremont Golf Club situated on an isolated spit of land that juts into the Derwent River just beyond the Cadbury chocolate factory. A bit of the hair of the dog that bit us in the clubhouse while waiting to tee off and we were once again doing battle down the first fairway in the shadows of the chocolate factory.  Three of the leaders Schimma, Fusspot & Quinny were grouped together and all got off to a tidy start and it was shot for shot until Fusspot had two too many shots from the greenside bunker on the seventh for a triple bogey and tripled again on the par five 8th. Quinny once again lost his nerve carding a pair of 9's on the same holes and just couldn't get it going (choker!), while a cool, calm & collected Schimma consolidated with 5 over for the front nine. As it turned out, the only other danger - Glenn also had a steady start only to crash on the par four 7th with an 8 and again on the ninth to go out in 52 shots. Murph, Gooey & Westy were traveling extremely well but were never going to trouble the leader.

While teeing off on the picturesque par three 15th Ray was reminded that the Massey is usually won / lost over the last four holes - but a snug, confident grin convinced us all that nothing was going to take this one away in his inauguaral Massey season.... or was it!  As Quinny & Fusspot were struggling along the 16th fairway they joked that the only thing that would stop Schimma was to sneak an extra club in his bag. Surprisingly, an embarrassed Ray Wiseman rather hastily zipped up his bag then sat with his head in his hands while sitting in the buggy before sheepishly admitting that he accidentally left an additional club (the one iron) in the bag that he had brought over "just in case" and had used it at least once during both rounds of the weekend! Word quickly reached all other players and one got the feeling that this was not going to simply blow over.

Schimma began to shake! He teed off for three following an unusual slice into the Derwent on 17... was his grip on the Massey slipping away? "How serious are these guys?... will I be disqualified?... what have I done???
The scorer was advised not to look at the cards and a meeting would have to be held to decide the fate of this very silly fellow.

After some mirth, stony silence befell the bus on the way back to Customs House as the handicapper / scorer read out rule 4-4 from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews Rules of Golf. "The player shall start a stipulated round with not more than fourteen clubs. He is limited to the clubs thus selected for that round..... PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 4-4 Stroke Play - Two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred; maximum penalty per round: four strokes. Whoa ho ho! Pandemonium broke lose as the occupants of the bus realised the true potential of such a penalty - as they continued to pull the piss out of this Johnny come lately shinboner.

Like a scene from The Twelve Angry Men,  Ray's destiny lay in the hands of the Massey jury holding court in Room 5 of Customs House. Much debate was had over how the situation should be dealt with. Then a nervous Schimma was escorted into the room where the secret ballot votes were read out one by one "Survivor" style....  among the screwed up papers were scribblings of tractors deciphered as a vote for Massey rules over the Royal & Ancient, and Hang the C...t  believed to be in the hand writing of his trusted defense representative.... but the tribe had spoken.... a  unanimous victory in favour of the Massey and Ray "Shimma" Wiseman was crowned Massey Champ 2004 - 2005.

All that aside, Schimma had played another consisted round of net 72 (and one under for the weekend) only shaded by Gooey (67 & 15th round win) & Murph (69). Fusspot (75) came in 7th and if he could swap cards with Ray (ie 3 shots the difference) this would have been enough to see him home. Other contenders Quinny & Glenn could only manage 10th (78) & 11th (79) with Kenny again bringing up the rear (29th time) with a net 90 and an extraordinary 241 strokes for the weekend.

And so concludes the mania in Tasmania, a sensational 20th anniversary weekend that I'm sure will be repeated again perhaps in 5 years time. Many thanks... mainly to our "tour promoter" - Jimmy and all others who contributed to this special weekend.
