ROUND EDITORIALS

ROUND ONE - GOOEY BREAKS THRU FOR MAIDEN VICTORY AROUND THE BEND
The season opener at Devil Bend saw Gooey cruise to his maiden win at the course after eleven unhappy attempts in a personal record net 69 with 90 off the stick (also a PB at the track). The same unfortunately cannot be said for the remainder of the field...  where most were unable to record a score below the substandard 80 mark. Mike & Jimmy waged a head to head battle for the minor placings with the former keeping his head in front in a bobbing finish. While Kenny adds to his already impressive tally of last placings.

ROUND TWO - QUINNY BACK FROM THE DEAD AT CARRINGTON PARK
Quinny's amazing comeback from the dead continued at Carrington Park - Rosebud with a fast finishing +6 (all scored on the back nine) to snatch career win No. 16 and his first ever at the track to be equal Massey leader. Beano's big pre-season also looks to be paying off with a solid +5 in equal second with the "King of Carrington" (Westy)... seven of the eleven starters posted positive scores in the "Par" event. However, first round victor Stuart "catch me if you can" Lamey went from chocolates to boiled lollies and the consistant Mark (equal leader) and Jimmy (third overall) again finished handy.
COURSE RECORDS (WORST): Gooey -  -9 (equal S.Souter)
PERSONAL BESTS: Quinny -  +6 (prev +4)); Scoot -  -7 (prev -9)
PERSONAL WORSTS: Murph -  -1 (prev +1); Mike -  -2 (n/a); Gooey -  -9 (+6)

ROUND THREE - HANDS & HEALS  FOR QUINNY AT TRAF
Quinny's new found form continued at Traf with a stunning hands & heals win to make it a running double, and take the twelve points ahead of Michael "stableford" Hall just one point away. However, in what can only be described as an insult to the ability of the rest of the field, a fellow competitor unfairly accused him of applying the hand break! Can you believe it? After carding a Massey course record 37 points. This can only serve to discredit the integrity of the accuser himself!!!
Mike now moves into second overall with Mark, Bean & Murph (third today) all still very handy. Jimmy was the big mover plummeting from third to eighth after recording the 20th last placing of his stellar, though up & down Massey career.
This round was also the Johnnie Walker Classic for 2003 - 2004 and in a tight finish the team of Henry (c), Murph, Gian & Quinny (also outright winner) made off with the J' Walker goodies provided by Jimmy (many thanks) after scoring 33 stableford points to hold off the challengers Gooey (c), Beano, Kenny and Scoot on 32 with Glenn (c), Jimmy, Mark & Mike only a further one point astray.
COURSE RECORDS: Quinny - 37 Points (prev 36 - A.Sawyer, M.Hall, M.O'Connor)
PERSONAL BESTS: Mike - 36 Points (prev 26); Scoot - 27 (prev 27)
PERSONAL WORSTS: Mark - 28 Points (prev 28); Westy - 26 (27); Gooey - 26 (28); Jimmy - 19 (22)

ROUND FOUR - GOOEY BOUNCES BACK AS QUINNY LOSES GRIP
Gooey adds to his already impressive record at Flinders with another top ten score after a consistent round of seven pars and only two double bogies to record net 60 off 82 strokes (best career score off the stick!) to bring him back into contention and in third place overall. Meanwhile Quinny loses his grip on the lead with three forgettable holes on the back nine which conservatively cost him ten shots. Oh well that's golf!!
However the real story belongs to Michael Hall whose return of net 64 off 88 strokes to tie with Jimmy (also back in the hunt) puts him in the overall lead with only Patto & Yarrawonga between him & immortality and is more than capable of handling the two shot shaving from his handicap.
Mark O'Connor shot a disappointing net 73 to tie with an equally disappointing Murph who both still have a mathematically possible chance. Beano got off to a great start and had every opportunity to improve on his fourth place but fell in a heap with too many Big Carls on the back stretch. It looks like Kenny, Glenn & Henry are back in form but it's probably all too late for them this year. Scoot had a handy back nine but an untidy start made a podium finish almost impossible. An uncharacteristic Gian apparently spat the dummy on the second last par three where he failed to finish the hole which probably cost him an extra shot on his handicap. You never know Gian it might cost you the Massey next year???).
Oh yeah - Westy shot a Massey course record 75 strokes!
COURSE RECORDS: Westy - 75 Strokes (prev 78 - P.West)
PERSONAL BESTS: Gooey - 82 Strokes (prev 84); Scoot - 74 Net (prev 80)

Merry Xmas to all and a very happy new year... see you at Patto.

ROUND FIVE - FIELD SPREADS AS "MASSEY" MIKE SPREAD EAGLES FIELD
Mark 'Fusspot' O'Connor did everything right to win the round by scoring 39 stableford points on the construction site they call Patterson River Country Club. While Gooey, also needing a good score did just that with a respectable 34. Quinny crashed in a costly bunker on the last to card 32 points and finished equal 5th. All were trying to make ground on the overall Massey leader but alas... Michael "Stableford" Hall was more than equal to the task when he finished with a tidy 37 points to take a resounding 5.5 point lead going into the final round on Yarrawonga Lakes.
It will take an almighty choke for him to lose from here! Not seen since 1990 - 1991 when the one & only Paul Henry West surrendered a 7.5 point margin to the rampaging Jimmy "2 iron" Griffiths.

Scoot completed the scene of destruction on the first tee when the head of his driver threatened to go further than the ball. Henry couldn't cope with the pitch & putt quality of the front nine where he could only muster 12 points but finished well when the course opened up on the back nine. Murph would have to be disappointed with his 33 points knowing he was 3 shots over his normal handicap on his home course.
Meanwhile Kenny notches up his quarter of a century of last placings and has only Gian behind him for the NAGA shirt who has played only the one game. Jimmy is now out of contention after missing the round due to work commitments, while  Glenn , Beano & Scoot are also out of contention.
PERSONAL BESTS: Fusspot - 39 Points (prev 36) & 84 Strokes (89); Mike - 37Points (36); Scoot - 31 (27)

A great time was had at Murph's afterBBQ where there was plenty of great food - Many thanks Murph and also to Jimmy for his edited version of the Massey video!

FINAL ROUND - FIELD SPREADS AS "MASSEY" MIKE SPREAD EAGLES FIELD
DEAR OH DEAR! "Overnight" leader Michael Hall tees off on the first tee at Yarrawonga taking with him a 5.5 point lead... but things didn't quite turn out the way he would have liked. While Quinny, Fusspot, Gooey & David 'mathematically possible' Murphy were able to just tee up and see what happens, Mike had nothing to gain and everything to lose!

Murph gave himself every possible opportunity with a polished Net 69 including a drive that I think was identified recently as possibly the tenth planet orbiting our solar system! But unfortunately for him he needed Quinny and Mark to finish one or two places lower than they did... How Sad! Glenn surprised many including himself by shooting a very respectable par round after crucifying himself the previous night on the turps...  he was clinically dead after a "Coburg & Kew" in the "Colonel Klink" on Saturday morning -  this was a resurrection of biblical proportions not seen for some 2000 years!

Gooey was pretty much out of contention after going out in 55 while Quinny was only just hanging on with a 50.  Mark with 46 was definitely on track while Mike (48) was probably doing enough to hold them out.

But it was all to be done on the back nine where Mike was holding it together after 14 holes and with only four holes to play for Massey immortality the mind starts to wander and keeps reminding you "don't stuff it up now"... then suddenly scores of 8, 6, 8, 8 appear on the card for a net 83, swinging the door ajar...

Meanwhile Mark compiled a 49 on the back (net 75) which was just one shot short of forcing a three way play off (between himself, Mike & Quinny). "That little prick" Quinny who could not quite get it going all day - registering only one par - somehow managed to not record a score worse than double bogie - holed a non-fussed five metre putt on the last to also record a net 75. But, knowing that he required six scores between him & Mike to win a second Massey and since two of his playing partners had better net scores than he and the other one (Gooey net 88) so bad that it was highly unlikely that six of the remaining seven competitors would be able to contribute to a second title.

But wait.... Gian comes in with another 75, Jimmy with a 76 (lipped out on the last - which would have forced a two way play-off between Mike & Quinny)), Scoot 79 (I'm glad I put him off 40!), Henry & Kenny 81's and Hey Presto - Massey No. 2 for the mighty Quinn and no cigar for poor old Mike.....

If I can make it any worse for you Mike.... after analysing the score cards you were leading the Massey at the 18th tee by 0.5 point with Jimmy in third place for the round but his 8 on the last proved the difference at the finish.

Oh well that's the Massey for you!

Another great finish to the season with many thanks to Jimmy's organisational skills and the splendid sponsorship of the meals & drinks by our corporate Massey members.

AMBROSE EVENT - FIELD SPREADS AS "MASSEY" MIKE SPREAD EAGLES FIELD
This seasons Ambrose event was taken out by the team of Henry, Kenny, Fusspot & Mike who compiled something like 8 birdies on the Murray Course to win on a double count back from Jimmy, Murph, Quinny & Gian.
