2019/20 FINAL ROUND REVIEWBARNBOUGLE - LOST FARM

And so it is back to the Lost Farm (with about 25km/h less winds than we faced on Friday) for the two horse race for The Massey. Mike holds a one point margin over Glenn and they have been drawn in the same group in which Mike also has to combat Robbo in the Matchplay final.

The Groups were drawn.....PW/MO/IQ/MW, DM/AS/RW/JG & MH/MR/GM/KB.

At the half way mark the scores were:
Murph 23 (38 strokes - Wow!), Henry 17 (also 38 strokes), Fatman 17, Robbo 16, Glenn 15, Schimma 15, Q 15, Bean 15 (retired hurt - to the bar!), Jimmy 12, Fussy 11, Kenny 9 (also retired hurt - to the bar!), & Mike 8 (O Oh).

The Match Play final sees Robbo clearing out to a four hole advantage at the half.

So, the "live ladder" at half time would see Glenn back in front with a 4.5 point lead over Mike who has a lot to do. However, there is the bonus of two players retiring.

Glenn capitalised on his early advantage by starting the back nine with two 2's, a 3 and another 2 pointer, while Mike went -/2/1/1/- and although he finished strongly with a couple of 3's and a 4, the damage was already done.

Meanwhile, Murph continued with his "stellar" round to accumulate another 19 points (inc. two wipes) to thrash the field by a 5 point winning margin.

Then it was back to the digs in Bridport for the reading of the scores / points and the winners presentations.

Scores were:
Murph 42 (23 out / 19 in), Schimma 37 (15/22), Henry 34 (17/17), Glenn 31 (15/16), Robbo 30 (16/14), Q 30 (15/15), Fussy 28 (11/17), Mark W 25 (17/8), Mike 24 (8/16), Jimmy 22 (12/10), Bean DNF 15 (after 9) & Kenny DNF 9 (after 9).

So Glenn posts a fourth Massey in 12 seasons  by claiming a four point win from Mike with Murph coming home well for his 11th podium finish from 29 seasons.

COURSE RECORD STAB:  D.Murphy 42 (prev. M.Robinson 35 two days ago)
HANDICAP WORST: M.O'Connor 28 (prev. 27.8)

The Three Day Aggregate individual total prizemoney went to Schimma with a combined 99 points to win by one point over Murph on 98 others were: MR 96, PW 92, GM 87, IQ 84, MH 80, MO 72, AS 63, JG 56, MW/RT (subs) 51+23 & KB 29.

The Nancarrows Cup Final: After a front nine lead of 4 holes Robbo won the next 3 to record a resounding 7 & 6 victory over Mike to take out his first Matchplay title.

Ambrose was played on the last day this year which consisted of two groups of four and one group of three (min. 4 drives each). Each player in the group of 3 took it in turns to play an eXtra ball. The group of 3 who were Murph, Fusspot & Jimmy The Griff romped it in scoring 67 off the stick off 10 1/8, over RW/MR/MH/AS 76 off 13 5/8 then PW/GM/IQ/KB 75 off 11 3/8.
I would like to know how many putts they nailed using the eXtra ball when putting twice in a row???

Anyway, it was great way to celebrate our 35th year.

Anecdote: After Robbo spent some extra time returning the rental bus at the airport he was typically organised by a panicking Schimma who ushered him through the departures in lobby "quick Robbo, hurry up, bring your golf bag over to the oversized baggage door". After arriving at Tulla and then waiting over half an hour at the luggage carousel, it was evident that Robbo's golf clubs were conspicuous by their absence. Another half an hour wait by the door while luggage attendant's had another look out the back we were then sent across the terminal to the missing baggage counter. Another half an hour later and his golf bag was discovered in Launceston behind the door where Schimma had told him to leave it . Trouble was, it wasn't checked in with a new tag placed on it..... and I still had to get to Leongatha!!

Long may we play.....

2019/20 ROUND SIX REVIEWBARNBOUGLE - THE DUNES

Groups for the round were drawn as follows.... KB/JG/RW/Mark West, MH/AS/DM/IQ, MR/GM/PW/MO

Glenn currently holds a narrow 2.5 pt lead over Mike with Bean now 7.5 points adrift. The pro shop was doing very well with its second hand golf ball sales after a brutal day at Lost Farm yesterday. The weather today was only marginally better around 19 deg but still pretty windy. The "real"  fatman made his way up from Hobart just making it to the first tee before the first group hit off. Kenny had had enough of golf already and was goin' fishing.

At the half way mark the scores were: Robbo 19 Henry & Q 17, Murph & Glenn 16, Mike 15; Schimma & Bean 13, Fatman 12, Fussy 11 and Jimmy 9.

At the end of the round Henry came out on top with 36 points (17 out / 19 in) followed by Mike who finished well to get 33 (15/18) and Q in third spot with a 32 (17/15). Other scores were: Robbo 31 (19/12), Schimma 30 (13/17), Glenn 30 (16/14), Murph 29 (16/13), Bean 27 (13/14), Mark W 26 (12/14), Fussy 21 (11/10) and Jimmy 19 (9/10).

So, we now have a two horse race and a new leader with Mike on 54 pts and Glenn just sitting one back (where he likes it) on 53. Robbo has gone into third - 10 points back on 44.

In the weekend aggregate challenge Robbo leads on 66 with Schimma 62, Henry 58, Murph, Glenn & Mike on 56.

HANDICAP WORST:  R.Wiseman 16.5 (prev. 15.9)

Nancarrow's Cup Match Play
semi finalists were Mike v Beano and Robbo v Glenn - Beano's 10th SF in 12 years of Matchplay.

On the front nine Mike went to a 4 hole lead over Bean and was 3 up after 9, Robbo got to 3 up before Glenn won the ninth to turn 2 down.

Bean then managed to claw back one hole but it wasn't enough as Mike went on to win 5 &4.
In the close one Glenn won on 12,13 &14 to take the lead only to see Robbo go bang, bang, bang on the next three to close it out 2 and 1.

Mike d Bean 5 & 4
Robbo d Glenn 2 & 1.

The Match Play Finalists are Mike v Robbo

The Final Round (inc Matchplay Final) is to be played on the Lost Farm Course on Sunday 1 March at 9.30am.

The Groups were drawn..... PW/MO/IQ/MW, DM/AS/RW/JG & MH/MR/GM/KB - Mike not only has the matchplay final to contend but also has Glenn his group - NO PRESSURE!

2019/20 ROUND FIVE REVIEWBARNBOUGLE - LOST FARM

Our intrepid troupe made their way to the Apple Isle (minus Gooey). Henry departed on a solo adventure by sea. Glenn, Fussy Kenny, Mike and The Bean flew over one day early to spend a "quiet" night in downtown Launceston. While Murph, Jimmy, Robbo, Schimma & Q caught the Massey version of The Red Eye early on the morning of the first days golf.

Coming into the weekend Glenn held the slenderest of margins (0.5 point) over Mike. Beano was a further two points back then another 4 points to the rest of the rabble. However, only 13.5 points separated 1st to 8th with 3 rounds (36 pts) to go.

There were four tee standards/placements at both courses and it was decided that we would play off the 2nd hardest tees for the weekend as the "tiger tees" probably would be just too difficult for most of us. Then, standing at the first tee in what can only be described as brutal 30 to 40 km winds and the 2nd hardest tee still had 100m of rough to clear (I'm talking long, thick sword grass which also covers both courses just outside the first cut of rough along nearly every fairway). This was going to be a LONG weekend indeed!

At the half way mark the scores were: Schimma 17, Glenn & Robbo 16, Kenny 15, Henry 14, Fussy  & Aunty Gus 13, Mike 12, Murph & Q 11, Jimmy 9, & Beano 8.

At the end of the round it was a steady Robbo who took the big points with a 35 (16 out/19 in) and an early lead in the weekend aggregate. Schimma compiled a 32 (17/15) in 2nd place  and Murph came back well on the back nine for 3rd with 27 (11/16). Other scores were: Glenn 26 (16/10), Fussy 23 (13/10), Mike 23 (12/11), Aunty Gus 23 (13/10), Henry 22 (14/8), Q 22 (11/11), Bean 22 (8/14), Kenny 20 (15/5) and Jimmy 15 (9/6).

Glenn has now extended his lead over Mike to 2.5 points while Bean slides back to be 7.5 points off the lead but still third overall. Murph and Robbo are probably the only others in realistic striking distance 8.5 and 10.5 points behind the leader.

PERSONAL WORST STAB:  J.Griffiths 15 (prev. 16)
HANDICAP WORST:  R.Wiseman 15.9 (prev. 15.5)

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Glenn d Kenny 2 & 1; Schimma d Mike 5 & 4; Aunty Gus (sub) lowered Jimmy's skirt 5 & 4
Pool B - Murph d Henry 2 & 1; Fussy d Q  4 & 3; Robbo d Bean 7 & 6.

In Pool A, After a tight battle with Kenny, Glenn goes through to the semi's courtesy of Jimmy's loss to Aunty Gus. Despite losing, Mike retains top spot.

In Pool B, Robbo gets into the semi's following his shellacking of the top dog Beano and Q misses out after being well beaten by Fussy. The Bean still goes into another matchplay semi final due to superior holes up advantage over Q.

The Matchplay Semi Finals are: Mike v Beano & Glenn v Robbo

Round Six (inc Matchplay Semi's) will be played on the Barnbougle - Dunes Course on Saturday 29 February at 12.30pm.

The groups including the Matchplay semi finalists are as follows:

KB
/JG/RW/Mark West
MH/AS/DM/IQ
MR/GM/PW/MO

ROUND 5, 6 & 7  PREVIEW
BARNBOUGLE - LOST FARM  - 1.00pm FRIDAY 28 FEBRUARY  - STABLEFORD
BARNBOUGLE - DUNES  - 12.30pm SATURDAY 29 FEBRUARY - STABLEFORD
BARNBOUGLE - LOST FARM - 9.30am SUNDAY 1 MARCH- STABLEFORD
BARNBOUGLE - DUNES - 8.00am MONDAY 2 MARCH - STABROSE

BARNBOUGLE - DUNES BARNBOUGLE - LOST FARM

The final three rounds are at Barnbougle Lost Farm & Dunes Courses in Bridport, Tasmania on Friday 28 Feb @ 1.00pm, Saturday 29 Feb @ 12.30pm and Monday 1 Mar @ 9.30am, playing stableford. Day one at Lost Farm will be Round 5, while day 2 at Barnbougle Dunes will see the Semi Finals of the Matchplay being contested during the penultimate Massey round. Day 3 is of course the final round for The Massey & the final of The Matchplay to be played back at Lost Farm.

The Stabrose Day will be held on the Dunes Course on Monday 2 Mar @ 8.00am.

The matchplay pairs for day 1 (Round 5) are as follows:

                 Group 1                      Group 2                     Group 3
Pool A      Glenn v Kenny       Schimma v Mike      Aunty Gus (aka Raelene - Sub for Gooey) Jimmy
Pool B      Murph v Henry        Q v Fussy                 Bean v Robbo

Mike has already qualified for the Matchplay Semi Finals in Pool A but 2nd place is still up for grabs with Jimmy playing the sub. He already has 2 pts in the bank (total 8) and will be playing for an extra point if he wins. Glenn (6 pts) & Kenny (5 pts) are playing each other. If Jimmy stays on 8 pts and Kenny wins by 5 holes (both 8 pts & 9 holes up) then Kenny goes thru on head to head victory over James. If Jimmy & Glenn both win & finish on 9 pts each and Glenn defeats Kenny by 3 holes then Jimmy & Glenn will be equal on 9 holes up, Jimmy would go through with a H2H victory over Glenn.
Jimmy can't get any more "holes up" as the "ROTRC" (Rules on The Run Committee) resided at the end of the last round & it was concluded that holes up against a sub does not count (Ba Ha Ha!)

In Pool B we have three players on 9 points each. Q needs to defeat Fussy to go through, as Bean & Robbo are playing against each other  therefore, the loser of that match will miss out on the Semi Finals. If Q loses then Bean & Robbo are safe due to superior holes up totals.

Groups for day 2 (Round 6) - inc. matchplay semi pairings to be drawn after round 5.

Groups for day 3 (Final Round) - inc. matchplay final pair to be drawn after round 6.

The playing groups for day 4 Stabrose to be drawn on Sunday arvo.

ROUND FOUR REVIEWLANG LANG GC  (SCOOT'S VB CLASSIC)

A full field assembled at Lang Lang where we haven't played since 2012/13. Conditions were warm and windy with David Twite substituting for Paul West who was playing off in the NGC club champs.

ROUND THREE REVIEW BAY VIEWS GOLF CLUB, ROSEBUD

At the risk of monotonously repeating myself - it was another very cool day for golf. The forecast was for strong winds & rain and on arrival at the course the rain was coming in sideways as predicted. However, the wind & rain miraculously disappeared on cue at the first tee after which conditions were calm and conducive to good scoring. Schimma was a late scratching because he didn't want to get wet??

And so, there were many great scores returned with only three recording over par rounds. None were greater than the mercurial effort of BIG Jim The Griff who was completely in The Zone all day to comprise a Massey record equalling stableford score of 49 points (22 out / 27 in) to unceremoniously discombobulate the field of Margarine Spreaders who were made to look like the Tea Ladies that we are!. In a distant 2nd place was Q who carded a 39 (21/18) and one point further back in equal third with 38's were Henry (19/19), Murph (18/20) & Fussy ( 16/22).

Our runner way leaders after round 2 Mike & Beano finished in the last two to make the overall leader board much more interesting after 3 rounds revealing 5 players within four points of the lead and 10 within 10 points.

Other scores were:
Glenn 37 (19/18), Gooey 36 (17/19), Robbo 36 (21/15), Kenny 34 (16/18), Mike 33 (19/14), Beano 29 (17/12) while Schimma kept himself all warm & cosy.

The wind and rain then returned while we were waxing lyrical at the post game session at Stella's Dromana Hotel.

ROUND TWO REVIEW ROSEBUD COUNTRY CLUB (NORTH)

Another cool but otherwise pleasant day as we returned to Rosebed CC with another full field for back to back rounds at the course.

It was a case of déjà vu all over again. Mike finished on 39 stableford (19 out / 20 in) & Beano on 38 (24/14) and have consolidated on their first up wins to produce the goods and also quinella this round. Glenn backed up as well to run a place  with a 37 (19/18). The top two have cleared out from the rest of the field with Glenn in his favourite "one out and one back" position in third spot overall, well clear of fourth.

Other scores were:
Jimmy 36 (18/18), Q 34 (16/18), Murph 33 (13/20), Schimma 31 (17/14), Gooey 31 (18/13), Robbo 31 (15/16), Kenny 30 (15/15), Henry 29 (14/15) & Fussy with 27 (11/16).

HANDICAP WORST:   R.Wiseman 14.7 (prev 14.6)

Pool B - Robbo d Henry 4 & 3; Q d Murph 2 up; Bean spiflicated Fussy 7 & 6.

2018-2019 FINAL ROUND - YARRAWONGA - MURRAY COURSE

Gooey held a one point lead over Henry & Schimma going into the final stanza to break the 2nd biggest drought in Massey history (only KB has longer!) and The Bean was also still a chance just 3 points off the pace. Q & Robbo were within 4.5 & 5.5 respectively but with only 9 players in the field it would be difficult to pass all those ahead of them..

The Groups were drawn..... PW/RW/JG, GM/MR/MH & AS/SL/IQ with Gooey & Q also playing off for Matchplay glory.

At the half way mark the scores were:
Jimmy 21, Gooey 18 (solid start!), Robbo 17, Glenn 16, Schimma 14, Beano 14, Henry 12 (Gone?), Q 11 (completely gone!!) & Michael 10.

The Match Play final had Gooey way out in front - 4up at the half.

So, the "live ladder" at half time would see Gooey in front with a 3.5 point lead over Schimma, 6 over Henry and 6.5 to Beano &  Robbo. While Jimmy The Griff was on target to break the Murray Course stableford record of 40 points.

After a disappointing front nine, Henry made a major surge in desperate pursuit of another crown where, after 7 holes he was 1 under the card! But, bogies on the last two holes could prove costly. Meanwhile, Gooey had started to choke a little and had four 1 pointers over the last six holes. Would it be enough?
No choking for The Griff as he carved up the back nine easing out another 23 points to smash the course record.

Then it was back to the balcony in the warm sunshine for the reading of the scores / points and the winners presentations.

Scores were:
Jimmy 44 (21 out / 23 in), Glenn 37 (16/21), Robbo 34 (17/17), Gooey 33 (18/15), Henry 32 (12/20), Mike 30 (10/20), Schimma 29 (14/15), Beano 28 (14/14) & Q 24 (11/13).

So Gooey breaks the drought with a clear two point advantage joining Glenn, Murph, Q & Schimma with three Massey titles. While Henry has to settle for runner up number four and Schimma does enough to get his first podium finish outside of his 3 wins.

COURSE RECORD STAB:  J.Griffiths 44 (prev. G.Martin 40 in 2012/13)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  S.Lamey 33 (prev. 31)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  M.Hall 30 (prev. 26)

The Two Day Aggregate individual total prizemoney went to Jimmy following his faultless 44 point final round to close with a combined 79 points over Robbo on 73 others were:
GM & SL 70, IQ 67, PW & MH 66, RW 61 & AS 59.

The Nancarrow's Cup Final: After the front nine lead of 4 holes Gooey won another 3 holes to one to record an easy 6 & 4 victory to take out his first Matchplay title and land the big double after being runner up last year. He also featured in the winning Scoot's Classic team. Not quite a triple crown but very close indeed. For Q, a second runners up in three years but still no cigar.

The Stabrose this year was 4 team of two event (9 drives each!) with Gooey leaving that morning with his trophies. The winners were: Glenn & The Bean with 64pts over PW/IQ 60 pts, MR/JG 59 pts & RW/MH 53.

2018/19 ROUND SIX REVIEWYARRAWONGA - LAKES COURSE (& MATCHPLAY SEMI'S)

Groups for the penultimate round were drawn as follows.... GM/MR/MH,  JG/AS/IQ & PW/RW/SL

Coming into the round Bean & Henry were co-leaders with Schimma in third just 1.5 pts behind and Gooey 4th within 3 points. Then another 5 pts to Glenn in 5th place.

At the half way mark the scores were: Q 25 (WTF!), Glenn 21, Gooey 20; Schimma & Jimmy 19, Henry, Mike & Robbo 18; and Beano 15.

At the end of the round Q did enough to break Jimmy's track record and salute with 43 points (25 out / 18 in), Robbo second with 39 (18/21) and Gooey a very significant 3rd place with a 37 (20/17). Other scores were: Mike 36 (18/18), Schimma 35 (19/16), Jimmy 35 (19/16), Henry 34 (18/16), Glenn 33 (21/12) and Beano 31 (15/16).

Gooey, who last won The Massey in 1988/89, moves up from 4th place overall to now hold a slender one point lead over Schimma & Henry while Beano has slipped back to 4th but only 3 points back.

COURSE RECORD STAB:  I.Quinton 43 (prev. J.Griffiths 42 in 2018/19 & 2015/16)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  I.Quinton 43 (prev. 32)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  M.Robinson 39 (prev. 31)

PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  S.Lamey 37 (prev. 31)

Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Gooey v Schimma and Beano v Quinny - Beano's 9th SF in 11 years of Matchplay.

After 9 holes Gooey turned 1 up while Beano "The Invincible" lost the last five holes to be 6 down at the half!
With three holes to play Gooey & Schimma were all square (no more than one hole diff all match) until Gooey won the next two to record a 2 & 1 victory and advance to his 2nd consecutive final. Meanwhile, Bean managed to hold that scoreline until the 13th and went down 6 & 5 (and he was pressuring the editor to get on with the wrap up???)

Gooey d Schimma 2 & 1
Q d Bean 6 & 5.

The Match Play Finalists are Gooey v Quinny

The Final Round (inc Matchplay Final) is to be played on the Yarrawonga Murray Course on Tuesday 19 February at 9.30am.

The Groups were drawn..... PW/RW/JG, GM/MR/MH & AS/SL/IQ

2018/19 ROUND FIVE REVIEWYARRAWONGA - LAKES COURSE (SCOOT'S VB CLASSIC)

Once again we were well short of a full field with only 9 starters for the weekend away with Kenny (inj), Murph & Fussy (omitted?).

Groups for Scoot's VB Classic were .... RW/GM/MH,  MR/IQ/AS & PW/SL/JG

Coming into the weekend Gooey was holding a slender 1.5 point lead over Bean & Schimma, 2.5 to Henry with Glenn just 4 points off the pace. In fact only 13.5 points separated the entire field with 3 rounds (36 pts) to go.

At the half way mark the scores were: Bean 25 (WOW!), Henry 20, Q & Jimmy 19, Schimma & Gooey 17, Glenn 16, Mike 12 & Robbo 11.

At the end of the round a resurgent Jimmy The Griff came out on top to take out Scoot's VB Classic and an early lead in the weekend aggregate with a superb 42 points (19 in / 23 out). Henry in 2nd with 40 (20/20) and The Bean hanging on for 3rd with 39 (25/14). Schimma 35 (17/18), Mike 35 (12/23 recovered well), Q 32 (19/13), the "overnight leader" Gooey could only manage 31 (17/14), Glenn 31 (16/15) and Robbo 27 (11/16) made no difference at all!.

Bean & Henry now take the lead in The Massey with Schimma doing enough to claim 3rd just 1.5 points astern. Gooey faltered to 4th spot but only 3 points away.

The Scoot's VB Classic Team results were:
PW/SL/JG -  39pts (brought ball home)
RW/GM/MH -  36pts (brought ball home)
MR/IQ/AS - 35pts (brought ball home)

COURSE RECORD STROKES:  P.West 75 (36/39) (prev. P.West 77 in 2012/13)
COURSE RECORD
STAB:  J.Griffiths 42 (=prev. J.Griffiths 42 in 2015/16)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  J.Griffiths 42 (=prev. 42)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  A.Sawyer 39 (prev. 34)

PERSONAL BEST STAB:  P.West 40 (= prev. 40)

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Mike v Schimma  AS; Jimmy d Henry 2up; Q d Murph by Forfeit
Pool B - Glenn d Kenny by Forfeit; Bean d Robbo 6 & 5; Gooey d Fussy by Forfeit.

In Pool A, Mike needed to beat Schimma to make the finals but could only manage to draw so Quinny goes through courtesy of a forfeit from Murph while Schimma maintains 1st place.

In Pool B, The mighty Bean is in yet another matchplay semi final with another huge win this time over Robbo. In doing so knocking Robbo out of finals contention. Gooey sneaks into the finals with his 3rd forfeit of the year and only one actual win!

Also this season Henry has shot three personal record stableford scores of 39. 40 & again in this round a 40 only to be beaten  every time by rounds in the low forties - now that is pretty funny!!

The Matchplay Semi Finals are: Schimma v Gooey & Beano v Q

Round Six (inc Matchplay Semi's) is also to be played on the Yarrawonga Lakes Course on Monday 18 February at 9.30am.

The groups including the Matchplay semi finalists are as follows:

GM/MR/MH
JG/AS/IQ
PW/RW/SL
