2018-2019 FINAL ROUND - YARRAWONGA - MURRAY COURSE

Gooey held a one point lead over Henry & Schimma going into the final stanza to break the biggest drought in Massey history and The Bean was also still a chance just 3 points off the pace. Q & Robbo were within 4.5 & 5.5 respectively but with only 9 players in the field it would be difficult to pass all those ahead of them..

The Groups were drawn..... PW/RW/JG, GM/MR/MH & AS/SL/IQ with Gooey & Q also playing off for Matchplay glory.

At the half way mark the scores were:
Jimmy 21, Gooey 18 (solid start!), Robbo 17, Glenn 16, Schimma 14, Beano 14, Henry 12 (Gone?), Q 11 (completely gone!!) & Michael 10.

The Match Play final had Gooey way out in front - 4up at the half.

So, the "live ladder" at half time would see Gooey in front with a 3.5 point lead over Schimma, 6 over Henry and 6.5 to Beano &  Robbo. While Jimmy The Griff was on target to break the Murray Course stableford record of 40 points.

After a disappointing front nine, Henry made a major surge in desperate pursuit of another crown where, after 7 holes he was 1 under the card! But, bogies on the last two holes could prove costly. Meanwhile, Gooey had started to choke a little and had four 1 pointers over the last six holes. Would it be enough?
No choking for The Griff as he carved up the back nine easing out another 23 points to smash the course record.

Then it was back to the balcony in the warm sunshine for the reading of the scores / points and the winners presentations.

Scores were:
Jimmy 44 (21 out / 23 in), Glenn 37 (16/21), Robbo 34 (17/17), Gooey 33 (18/15), Henry 32 (12/20), Mike 30 (10/20), Schimma 29 (14/15), Beano 28 (14/14) & Q 24 (11/13).

So Gooey breaks the drought with a clear two point advantage joining Glenn, Murph, Q & Schimma with three Massey titles. While Henry has to settle for runner up number four and Schimma does enough to get his first podium finish outside of his 3 wins.

COURSE RECORD STAB:  J.Griffiths 44 (prev. G.Martin 40 in 2012/13)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  S.Lamey 33 (prev. 31)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  M.Hall 30 (prev. 26)

The Two Day Aggregate individual total prizemoney went to Jimmy following his faultless 44 point final round to close with a combined 79 points over Robbo on 73 others were:
GM & SL 70, IQ 67, PW & MH 66, RW 61 & AS 59.

The Nancarrow's Cup Final: After the front nine lead of 4 holes Gooey won another 3 holes to one to record an easy 6 & 4 victory to take out his first Matchplay title and land the big double after being runner up last year. He also featured in the winning Scoot's Classic team. Not quite a triple crown but very close indeed. For Q, a second runners up in three years but still no cigar.

The Stabrose this year was 4 team of two event (9 drives each!) with Gooey leaving that morning with his trophies. The winners were: Glenn & The Bean with 64pts over PW/IQ 60 pts, MR/JG 59 pts & RW/MH 53.

2018/19 ROUND SIX REVIEWYARRAWONGA - LAKES COURSE (& MATCHPLAY SEMI'S)

Groups for the penultimate round were drawn as follows.... GM/MR/MH,  JG/AS/IQ & PW/RW/SL

Coming into the round Bean & Henry were co-leaders with Schimma in third just 1.5 pts behind and Gooey 4th within 3 points. Then another 5 pts to Glenn in 5th place.

At the half way mark the scores were: Q 25 (WTF!), Glenn 21, Gooey 20; Schimma & Jimmy 19, Henry, Mike & Robbo 18; and Beano 15.

At the end of the round Q did enough to break Jimmy's track record and salute with 43 points (25 out / 18 in), Robbo second with 39 (18/21) and Gooey a very significant 3rd place with a 37 (20/17). Other scores were: Mike 36 (18/18), Schimma 35 (19/16), Jimmy 35 (19/16), Henry 34 (18/16), Glenn 33 (21/12) and Beano 31 (15/16).

Gooey, who last won The Massey in 1988/89, moves up from 4th place overall to now hold a slender one point lead over Schimma & Henry while Beano has slipped back to 4th but only 3 points back.

COURSE RECORD STAB:  I.Quinton 43 (prev. J.Griffiths 42 in 2018/19 & 2015/16)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  I.Quinton 43 (prev. 32)
PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  M.Robinson 39 (prev. 31)

PERSONAL COURSE BEST STAB:  S.Lamey 37 (prev. 31)

Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Gooey v Schimma and Beano v Quinny - Beano's 9th SF in 11 years of Matchplay.

After 9 holes Gooey turned 1 up while Beano "The Invincible" lost the last five holes to be 6 down at the half!
With three holes to play Gooey & Schimma were all square (no more than one hole diff all match) until Gooey won the next two to record a 2 & 1 victory and advance to his 2nd consecutive final. Meanwhile, Bean managed to hold that scoreline until the 13th and went down 6 & 5 (and he was pressuring the editor to get on with the wrap up???)

Gooey d Schimma 2 & 1
Q d Bean 6 & 5.

The Match Play Finalists are Gooey v Quinny

The Final Round (inc Matchplay Final) is to be played on the Yarrawonga Murray Course on Tuesday 19 February at 9.30am.

The Groups were drawn..... PW/RW/JG, GM/MR/MH & AS/SL/IQ

2018/19 ROUND FIVE REVIEWYARRAWONGA - LAKES COURSE (SCOOT'S VB CLASSIC)

Once again we were well short of a full field with only 9 starters for the weekend away with Kenny (inj), Murph & Fussy (omitted?).

Groups for Scoot's VB Classic were .... RW/GM/MH,  MR/IQ/AS & PW/SL/JG

Coming into the weekend Gooey was holding a slender 1.5 point lead over Bean & Schimma, 2.5 to Henry with Glenn just 4 points off the pace. In fact only 13.5 points separated the entire field with 3 rounds (36 pts) to go.

At the half way mark the scores were: Bean 25 (WOW!), Henry 20, Q & Jimmy 19, Schimma & Gooey 17, Glenn 16, Mike 12 & Robbo 11.

At the end of the round a resurgent Jimmy The Griff came out on top to take out Scoot's VB Classic and an early lead in the weekend aggregate with a superb 42 points (19 in / 23 out). Henry in 2nd with 40 (20/20) and The Bean hanging on for 3rd with 39 (25/14). Schimma 35 (17/18), Mike 35 (12/23 recovered well), Q 32 (19/13), the "overnight leader" Gooey could only manage 31 (17/14), Glenn 31 (16/15) and Robbo 27 (11/16) made no difference at all!.

Bean & Henry now take the lead in The Massey with Schimma doing enough to claim 3rd just 1.5 points astern. Gooey faltered to 4th spot but only 3 points away.

The Scoot's VB Classic Team results were:
PW/SL/JG -  39pts (brought ball home)
RW/GM/MH -  36pts (brought ball home)
MR/IQ/AS - 35pts (brought ball home)

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Mike v Schimma  AS; Jimmy d Henry 2up; Q d Murph by Forfeit
Pool B - Glenn d Kenny by Forfeit; Bean d Robbo 6 & 5; Gooey d Fussy by Forfeit.

In Pool A, Mike needed to beat Schimma to make the finals but could only manage to draw so Quinny goes through courtesy of a forfeit from Murph while Schimma maintains 1st place.

In Pool B, The mighty Bean is in yet another matchplay semi final with another huge win this time over Robbo. In doing so knocking Robbo out of finals contention. Gooey sneaks into the finals with his 3rd forfeit of the year and only one actual win!

Also this season Henry has shot three personal record stableford scores of 39. 40 & again in this round a 40 only to be beaten  every time by rounds in the low forties - now that is pretty funny!!

The Matchplay Semi Finals are: Schimma v Gooey & Beano v Q

Round Six (inc Matchplay Semi's) is also to be played on the Yarrawonga Lakes Course on Monday 18 February at 9.30am.

The groups including the Matchplay semi finalists are as follows:

GM/MR/MH
JG/AS/IQ
PW/RW/SL

 ROUND THREE  Results FLINDERS

Kenny, Murph & Mike were withdrawals this time on another perfect day for golf. With the three scratchings and 4 matchplays available to be completed, the options were either groups of 4, 3 & 2  or  4 & 5. Therefore, it was decided that Scoot's VB Classic be postponed to the first day at Yarrawonga where we will have two groups of 3 and one of 4. Hopefully!

Fusspots came out with all guns blazing shooting the top score of 40 points (21 out & 19 in) off the tiger tees (after Henry sucked us all in to playing - totally different track than what we are used too). Equal 2nd were Gooey (15/20), Robbo (20/15) & Bean (14/21). The Bean has now compiled three 2nd places in a row to move into 2nd place overall after missing the first round. However, it is Gooey who has snuck into the overall lead after another podium finish at the track.

Other scores were:
Glenn 33 (14/19), Jimmy 32 (19/13), Schimma 30 (12/18), Henry 27 (10/17) & Q 18 (10/8).

PERSONAL WORST: I.Quinton 18pts (prev. 20)
COURSE WORST: I.Quinton 18pts (prev. S.Soutar 20 in 12/13)

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Mike v Murph No Result; Schimma d Henry 2 & 1; Jimmy d Quinny 3 & 2.
Pool B - Bean d Kenny by Forfeit; Gooey d Glenn 4 & 2; Fussy d Robbo 3 & 1.

The next round is "Scoot's VB Classic" and the final Match Play round at Yarrawonga Lakes on Sunday 17 February at 1.00pm.

 ROUND 4 PREVIEW -  FLINDERS - 3.00pm SUNDAY 20 JANUARY 2019 - STAB

The next round is at Flinders on Sunday 20 January from 3.00pm playing stableford.

Beers & Scores at the Pub after the game.

The matchplay pairs (and Scoot's VB Classic Teams) are as follows:

                 Group 1                 Group 2                      Group 3
Pool A      Mike v Murph         Schimma v Henry      Jimmy Quinny
Pool B      Bean v Kenny        Gooey v Glenn          Fussy v Robbo

However, now that both Kenny & Mike are scratchings not only gives Bean & Murph forfeits in matchplay but also leaves their group too short! Either we get a ring in (guest player or two) to make a minimum of three for the VB Classic or we split one of the other groups with one pair playing with Murph & the other pair playing with Bean. This could be drawn at the first tee????

ROUND THREE  Results MOONAH LINKS - LEGENDS COURSE

Kenny & Murph were scratchings and the sub was none other than former Massey player David Twite.

Henry is making the most of the HIGH handicap that he accumulated last year winning the day with a personal best stableford score of 40 (21 out / 19 in) with the evergreen Bean not far behind shooting a 38 (19/19), quickly making up ground after missing the first round. Gooey rounded out the podium with a fine 36 (16/20) to be right amongst the leaders.

Henry and Schimma now tie for first place overall with Mike slipping to third after finishing ninth here. There is currently only 9 points separating the top nine after 3 rounds with one more round before the final weekend.

Other scores were:
Schimma 35 (17/18), Glenn 31 (15/16), Robbo 30 (16/14), Q 30 (17/13), Fussy 29 (14/15), Jimmy 24 (11/13), Mike 24 (14/10) & Twat 23 (9/14).

PERSONAL BEST: P.West 40pts (prev. 39 at Rosebud CC last round - HANDICAPPER!!!)

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Schimma d Jimmy 4 & 3; Quinny d Mike 3 & 1; Henry d (Sub) Twatty 8 & 7.
Pool B - Bean d Fussy 6 & 4; Gooey d Kenny by Forfeit; Robbo v Glenn AS.

A beautiful day for our first round of the year with windless, mild and pleasant conditions playing the back nine first. With the Bean as a late scratching

Q gets himself off to a healthy start this season with a scintillating 45 points (23 out / 22 in) with Murph very unlucky to finish 2nd on 44 points (22/22) which represents the equivalent of around 76 stokes (albeit with one hole wiped) and Schimma rounds out the podium with a handy 39.(19/20) .While Kenny, obviously struggling with his damaged wrist, retired hurt with an incomplete round of only 6 points after 9 holes.

Other scores were:
Glenn 37 (21/16), Mike 37 (12/25), Fussy 35 (14/21), Gooey 34 (18/16), Jimmy 34 (15/19), Henry 32 (16/16), Robbo 28 (19/9), Kenny (6/- DNF after 9 holes).

Due to Patto River GC policy and to protect Fussy's membership we will purchase beers at the bar. Fussy will check on the bar closing times and ask to book a BBQ for us to use on the outdoor deck area.  If they are closed early then I suggest we stock a slab or two & bbq off the back of the ute.

2017-2018 FINAL ROUND - BLACK BULL GC YARRAWONGA

With only 3.5 points separating Bean, Schimma, Murph & Gooey we were off to the Black Bull GC on a very unYarrawonga like cold & rainy day for the conclusion to season 2017/18.

At the half way mark the scores were:
Murph (off to a flyer!) 22, Schimma 19, Robbo 19, Fussy 18, Glenn 18, Quinny 16, Mike 16, Beano 13 (gone!), Jimmy 10  & Gooey 9 (also gone!).

The Match Play final had Michael turn 2 up at the half with Gooey winning the ninth to stay within reach.

So, barring any miracles it was now down to just Murph & Schimma head to head!. With Schimma only 0.5 point ahead of Murph going into the final game means that Muph now leads The Massey by 0.5 a point (or by 3 stableford points to be more precise!)

Remembering that they are in different groups so let's recap their hole by hole situation - Shall we!

10th - Murph has his first wipe while Schimma managed 1 pt (Murph leads by 2);
11th - Murph 2pts / Schimma 1 (Murph by 3);
12th - Murph 2 / Schimma 2;
13th - Murph 2 / Schimma 3 (Murph by 2);
14th - Murph 1 / Schimma 3 (Wow! All Square);
15th - Murph 2 / Schimma 1 (Murph back up by 1);
16th - Murph 2 / Schimma 1 (Murph now by 2) - Was the little man in his head starting to whisper?...
17th - Murph - /  Schimma 2 (Murph missed his approach way right and was beginning to scramble - I mean CHOKE! - up by 1)
18th - Murph - /  Schimma 1 (Murph way right again on approach, below right hand bunker - down hill  and couldn't get up & down

Hot coffees were the order of the day rather than cold beers in the Pro Shop where we awaited the all clear from the scorer that no play off is required. Then back to the Lake Edge Resort for the reading of the scores / points.

Scores were:
Robbo 40 (19 out / 21 in), Glenn 34 (18/16), Schimma 33 (19/14), Murph 33 (22/11), Mike 32 (16/16), Fussy 31 (18/13), Q 30 (16/14), Jimmy 26 (10/16), Beano 21 (13/8) & Gooey 21 (9/12).

So Schimma holds onto to his 0.5 point advantage to bring The Tractor home joining Glenn, Murph & Q with three Massey titles. While Murph has to settle for runner up number five (does anyone know what happened to the TV remote?) and Glenn snuck in for third place to record his 16th podium finish.

Aggregate individual weekend total prizemoney went to Robbo following his 40 point final round to close with a combined 71 points over Schimma 67 others were:
DM 65, GM 64, MO 58, IQ 54, SL & JG 53, MH 52 & AS 51.

The prizemoney for the Pairs event in the final round went to the combination of Robbo & Glenn on 74 (40/34), then RW/IQ 63 (33/30), MO/JG 57 (31/26), DM/AS 54 (33/21) & MH/SL 53 (32/21).

The Nancarrow's Cup Final: With a 2 hole deficit at the half way mark Gooey could only halve the next four and was running out of holes when Michael struck the killer blow at the 14th with a 3 pointer to win his first matchplay 5 & 3.

The Stabrose this year was held on the first day (Friday) at the Yarrawonga Murray Course to enable Gooey to contest the Massey & Matchplay finals. Three teams of three this year with all players to have 6 drives making decisions very tricky for the captains. The winners were: Schimma, Robbo & Q 101pts. (Q contributing 58pts by himself - just sayin') to DM/JG/MH 86 pts & GM/MO/AS 79.

2017/18 ROUND SIX REVIEWCOROWA GC (East Course)

Only 10 starters made it away for the weekend with Kenny & Henry both being ruled out for the finals due to injury.

Groups were drawn .... GM/SL/AS,  MO/MH/JG & DM/RW/MR/IQ

Coming into the weekend Bean was holding a very handy 5 point lead over Murph, with Schimma  a further 1 point back & another point to Glenn & Gooey. At the half way mark (playing the back nine first) the scores were: Scimma & Jimmy 17, Glenn 16, Robbo 15, Gooey 14, Murph 13 (hooking & shanking the ball everywhere over first four holes), Mike 13, Fussy 12, Q 11 & Bean (another slow start) with only 9 stableford points

At the end of the round we see a very consistent Schimma coming in with 34 points (17 & 17), Murph & Gooey recovering extremely well with 32's (13/19 & 14/18 respectively) and Robbo 31 (15/16) in 3rd. Then 30's to Bean (9/21 needed that!), Glenn (16/14) & Mike (13/17), 27's to Fussy (12/15) & Jimmy (17/10) with a very disappointing round from Q in last place with only 24 ( (11/13).

Bean did enough though to maintain a 1 point lead over Schimma, 1.5 over Murph, 3.5 to Gooey, 7 to Glenn and 9.5 to Mike the only other mathematical chance.

HANDICAP WORST:  M.Hall 34.1 (prev. 33.5)

Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Gooey v Bean and Mike v Jimmy - Beano's 8th SF & Mike's 1st in 10 years of Matchplay.

After 9 holes Gooey turned 2 up while Jimmy also held a 2 hole lead over Mike. Gooey maintained his lead to record a 2 and 1 win while Mike won the last two holes to finish all square. There was a Massey rule in place (with several precedence's) to save time & reward the top seeded player (Michael) the win and avoid a tricky play off situation on a busy course - the only requirement for a playoff being in a Grand Final. This rule seemed to be forgotten. However to avoid any conjecture Jimmy graciously conceded and Mike goes into the final against Gooey.

Gooey d Beano 2 & 1
Mike d Jimmy AS.

The Match Play Finalists are Mike v Gooey (both in their first final)

The final round will be at Black Bull GC, Yarrawonga on Sunday 25 March from 9.04am.
Groups were drawn..... DM/IQ/AS, MR/MO/JG & MH/SL/GM/RW
