2014-2015 FINAL ROUND - LONSDALE GC - HISTORY NEVER REPEATS OR DOES IT!

With only three players left with a mathematical chance of winning the Massey and Jimmy a whopping 7.5 pts ahead of Glenn and a big chance for the double (inc. Match Play!). But will he struggle with a jarred thumb received during yesterday play - we headed off to Lonsdale GC.

At the half way mark (back nine played first) The scores were:
Fussy 23, Scoot 20, Robbo 19, Murph & Gooey 18, Henry & Q 17, Mike 16, Beano 15, Glenn & Jimmy 14, Schimma 12. Once again the leaders were succumbing to the pressure, and Beano & Glenn need to make up 8 points to catch Jimmy and still had a lot to do with only 9 holes left but Jimmy was seen struggling with his injury.

The Match Play final saw Fussy 5 up at the half after winning the first 5 holes with the monkey on his back getting very restless.

Bean struggled to get going coming in with only 14pts for a total of 29, Jimmy clearly battling, managed only to muster another 13 points for a total of 27. However, reminiscent of 08/09, Glenn fought back with 21 pts for a total of 35 to finish fifth on the day which meant Jimmy needed to finish last for an upset. Then as the cards were collated back at the Seaview Cottages lounge / bar it was revealed that history would indeed repeat for Glenn as he brought home his second Massey title from a long way back - this time by 0.5 points but no play-off required.

Fusspot shot an incredible 43 points to win the round and the Match Play final 6 & 4 over the wounded Jimmy and the monkey was finally off his back which was last seen amongst the bamboo trees of the Esplanade Hotel beer garden waiting for the Rod Stewart (or was it Brian Mannix? - Nar nar not me!) tribute show.

Scores were:
Fussy 43 (23 out / 20 in), Scoot 40 (20/20), Henry 36 (17/19), Robbo 36 (19/17), Glenn 35 (14/21), Gooey 31 (18/13),
Murph 30 (18/12, Q 30 (17/13), Mike 30 (16/14), Beano 29 (15/14), Schimma 28 (12/16), Jimmy 27 (14/13).

Aggregate Stableford results were: RW/MR/SS/IQ 140, JG/MO/SL/MH 131, PW/DM/GM/AS 130.

The Nancarrow's Cup Final: Fussy d Jimmy 6 & 5.

Sunday's Ambrose results at Curlewis were: Henry, Jimmy, Mike & Gooey net 54.9 off 10.1 (birdied 6 of last 7 holes!). GM/MO/AS net 56.5 off 12.5 and RW/SS/MR/IQ net 59.9 off 12.1

2014-2015 ROUND SIXTHIRTEENTH BEACH - WILL HISTORY REPEAT?

Overseas to the Bellarine Peninsula for the penultimate & final rounds of the 35th Massey staying in historical Queenscliff where the Seaview Cottages hosted by Helen & John provided us with a real private Massey club house type of feel.

The windswept Thirteenth Beach greeted us for the traditional moving day of the Massey with "No.13" Robbo once again filling the breach (good onya mate!) after Kenny had withdrawn due to work commitments.

At the half way mark the scores were: Murph 22 (39 strokes!), Glenn 19, Mike 17, Fussy 16, Henry, Jimmy & Gooey 15, Bean & Scoot 12, Robbo 11, Schimma 10 & Quinny 9

All scores returned for the day proved how tough the going was with everyone failing to get close to par 36 points. It was Murph & Glenn who tied in first place with 33 pts a piece, Murph with only 11 points coming in and Glenn in with 14. While Henry came in with a 13 for a total of 28 points for third. The Massey leader managed to tie for fifth with 26 points - this was enough for Jimmy to increase his lead over Bean to 8 points. However, Glenn edged into 2nd place but still 7.5 points behind with one round to go. The biggest lead since Glenn overhauled Kenny at The Dunes in 08/09.

Other scores were:

Robbo 27 (11/16), Q 26 (9/17), Jimmy 26 (15/11), Schimma 25 (10/15), Mike 25 (17/8), Fussy 24 (16/8), Bean 22 (12/10), Scoot 22 (12/10) & Gooey 15 (7/8 - what!).

Aggregate Stableford results were: - PW/DM/IQ/MR 115; RW/GM/MH/SS 105; SL/MO/JG/AS 87 (The Match Play Group!).

PERSONAL WORST:    Stableford - S.Lamey 15 (prev. 22); R.Wiseman 25 (= prev. 25)

Nancarrow's Cup Match Play semi finalists were Jimmy v Beano and Fussy v Gooey -  (Beano's 5th SF & Fussy's 4th)

After 9 holes Jimmy turned 1 up while Fussy had already picked up 5 holes over a struggling Gooey (with 5 wipes!). This match was all over at the 13th with Fusspot scoring a resounding 6 & 5 win to go into his third GF. Whilst Jimmy got away from Bean with a 4 & 2 win for his 2nd GF appearance.

Jimmy def Beano 4 & 2
Fussy thrashed Gooey 6 & 5.

The Match Play Finalists are Jimmy v Fussy plus monkey!

The final round will be at Lonsdale Golf Club on Saturday 21March from 8.50am.
Groups were drawn..... PW/DM/GM/AS;  JG/MO/SL/MH;  RW/MR/SS/IQ

ROUND FIVECARRINGTON PARK - MICHAEL "STABLEFORD" HALL RETURNS!

Mike had a day out to finish the round with a magnificent 49 points (25 out & 24 in) new Massey Record Wow! (refer table below) However, our Massey leader, Jimmy also returned a great round of 43 points (19 & 24) to increase his hold on a potential 6th trophy to come in second. While the other pacesetter, Beano also had a terrific 42 points (20 & 22) to complete the podium. In all 8 out of 11 players bettered or played to their handicap on the very familiar Rosebud track.

Jimmy now has a three point lead over Bean, while Glenn is 10.5 points off the pace in third place. Fussy & Gooey are just hanging in but are 12.5 & 14.5 points adrift respectively with the final two rounds still to be played on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Mike d Jimmy 3 & 1, Q d Scoot by Forfeit; Gooey d Henry 1up.
Pool B - Bean d Kenny 2up; Schimma d Glenn 3 & 2; Fussy d Beardy (Murph) 1up.

The mighty Bean goes into the Semi's undefeated! Gooey is still alive for a possible (albeit unlikely) tilt at the Triple Crown!

The final rounds are at Thirteenth Beach (Beach Course) on Friday 20 March at 1.56pm & Point Lonsdale on Saturday 21 March at 8.50am. With Ambrose day at Curlewis Sunday 22 March at 11.00am. Staying at Seaview Cottages in Queenscliff.
Groups will need to be drawn at the first tee (or earlier - on the Ferry?) with match play semi finalists traditionally making up one group - maybe 2nd so other groups can keep tabs on how they are going.

ROUND FOURLEONGATHA - "STILL A LOG JAM" BUT SAME TOP THREE

Quinny (17 in & 18 out) & "The Difference" Robbo (13 & 22!) took the honours with 35's as no one was able to better their handicaps at Leongatha in rather benign conditions. Jimmy built on his slender overall lead with 34 points (15 & 19) to claim third place points. While Beano wasn't far off with 33 pts (17 & 16). We now have eight players within 12.5 points with still three rounds to play. Kenny would have made it 9 if not for his scratching.

ROUND THREECAPE SCHANCK - "IT'S A LOG JAM" AS GOOEY SEALS MAIDEN DEWARS WIN

Gooey sealed a maiden Dewars Classic victory with his masterful chipping on display scoring the only sub handicap total of 37 (20 out & 17 in) for the day. While Henry (19 & 16) & Murph (21 & 14) tied for 2nd on 35 points. The 2nd round runaway leaders submitted mediocre scores - Jimmy, Bean & Glenn only just did enough to maintain the top three places on the Massey table which now sees a log jam near the top.

Jimmy is now at number one with 27.5 pts, Beano 2nd on 26.5 and Glenn now equal 3rd with Gooey on 24.5 points. There is now only 5 points separating first and seventh with the rest at least 9.5 points adrift with lots to do to stay in the contest.

Other scores were:

ROUND TWOROSEBUD COUNTRY CLUB (NORTH) - IS THE "TC" UNDER THREAT YET AGAIN?

The Bean got the maximum collect with a super 42 stableford points (24 out & 18 in). Is this the relaunch of another Triple Crown tilt? Fusspot was an unlucky second with 41 (22 & 19), while Henry (18 & 21), Glenn (18 & 21) & Jimmy (22 & 17) also consolidated their overall position with 39's in equal third on a day where half the field boasted sub par scores (36+).

ROUND ONEDEVIL BEND - HANDS & HEELS FOR GLENN BUT JIMMY'S ONE OUT & ONE BACK!

It was great to see a full Massey field get together for the first hit out for our 30th season.

Glenn got off to a great start to come home with the points with a solid round of 39 stableford (20 out & 19 in) with Jimmy a very close second scoring a handy 38 stableford (19 & 19) from his monster handicap (he's straight in the black book!). Three players finishing equal third on 35 stableford were Murph (17 & 18), Gooey (16 & 19) & Beano (16 & 19). Last years champ, carrying the burden of a massive 4pt penalty (now 10% or minimum 1pt!), managed some handy points coming in with a 31 (16 & 15).

Other scores were:
Schimma 30 (15/15), Henry 29 (12/17), Fussy 29 (17/12), Kenny 29 (14/15), Q 27 (14/13) & Mike 27 (16/11).

COURSE RECORDS:    NA
COURSE WORST:        NA
HANDICAP WORST:     A.Sawyer 38.9 (prev. 38.8)

The Nancarrow's Cup match play results were as follows:

Pool A - Gooey d Scoot 4 & 2, Henry d Mike 2up; Jimmy d Q 4 & 2.
Pool B - Kenny d Schimma 1up; Glenn d Murph 3 & 2; Bean d Fussy 2 & 1.

 FIRST ROUND - DEVIL BEND - 8.30am SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER 2014 - STABLEFORD
Due to Patterson River being unavailable & a number of players unable to make the post AFL Grand Final date (hopefully, yours truly will have a premiership hangover that will last at least a month) and since everyone seems to be available for the majestic Devil Bend GC on 26 October @ 8.30am then this has now been declared to be round 1.

The following courses have been booked to get us underway for our 30th season.

Round 1   Sunday    26 October at 8.30am - DEVIL BEND
Round 2   Sunday    30 November at 2.00pm - ROSEBUD COUNTRY CLUB
Round 3   Friday       23 January at 3.00pm - CAPE SCHANCK (The Dewars)
Round 4   Sunday    15  February at 9.30am - LEONGATHA
Round 5   Sunday    1 March - TBC
Round 6   Friday      20 March at 1.56pm - THIRTEENTH BEACH
Round 7   Saturday  21 March at 8.50am - POINT LONSDALE
Ambrose   Sunday   22 March at 11.00am - CURLEWIS

Or alternatively, we could squeeze Flinders (twilight) into 14 December (Round 3), Leongatha to mid February (Round 5) and Trip Away on Labour Day weekend in March as originally planned???? - to be discussed at BBQ after Devil Bend - bring your ideas / thoughts!
The starting handicaps are shown to the left (in the FINAL SCORE table) and starting groups are determined by the crossing over of the matchplay tables ie 1st, 3rd & 5th of Pool A are re-pooled with 2nd, 4th & 6th from Pool B and the previously set Matchplay schedule using player numbers 1 to 6 sets the groups - ie no draw required.

Note: PROPOSED RULE CHANGES - Decision to be made on the adjustment to Scoot's handicap - is it 2 strokes (ie 38.3) or 10% as mooted by our lower handicappers being 4 strokes (ie 36.3)? Also, if there is a replacement in the matchplay due to an absent player then 2 pts for a forfeit is still awarded and need to beat the replacement for the 3 points. Last year some players got 2 points for a forfeit (no replacement) and others 0 points for losing to replacement!

The playing groups at Devil Bend with matchplay pairs are as follows:

Group 1                                   Group 2                                     Group 3

2013-2014 FINAL ROUND - THE DUNES - SUPERCHARGED MOTOR SCOOTER!

With four players left with a mathematical chance of winning the Massey and Scoot now only 1.5 pts behind and a big chance for the double (inc. Match Play!), we headed off to Glenn's home track - The Dunes.

At the half way mark (back nine played first) The scores were:
Fussy 24, Henry 23, Schimma 21, Mike 20, Beardy 18, Murph 16, Gooey 14, Scoot 14, Q 13, Beano 12, Glenn 11, Kenny 9. Obviously, the leaders were feeling the pressure and it was still anybody's to win! The Match Play final saw Murph 2 up at the half.

At the end of play scores revealed that Gooey never got going, producing only another 13 points for a total of 27 (gone!) Q fought back with 20 pts for a total of 33 (still a slight chance?), Glenn also dug deep to bring in another 19 pts for a total of 30 (still alive??). Then as the cards were collated it was revealed that Scoot would motor home with a staggering 29 points to finish well clear with a winning total of 43 stableford to win his maiden Massey title and also claim the double by finishing all over Murph in the Match Play final to salute 3 & 1. Fussy & Schimma were 2nd & 3rd on the day with 41 & 40 pts respectively.

It was now very obvious that the Massey equalisation strategy has been a massive success (Murph was not impressed though - hmm unfortunate collateral damage!) In the last six seasons we have seen three maiden Massey winners and another with his first win in 19 years (including the Triple Crown). There is now only one member who has never won the Massey and his football team has not won a flag in Massey history either - can you guess who he is? Not sure we can rig anything to conjure up a victory anytime soon!

Scoot finished the season with 62.5 points (24 pts this weekend!) and he missed the first round! Glenn did enough to secure his 8th runners up with 57. Q completed the podium with 54 pts in third place.

Scores were:

Scoot 43 (14 out / 29 in), Fussy 41 (24/17), Schimma 40 (21/19), Henry 38 (23/15), Mike 36 (20/16), Q 33 (13/20),
Beardy 31 (18/13, Glenn 30 (11/19), Gooey 27 (14/13), Kenny 20 (9/11), Bean 18 (12/6).

Nearest the Pin winners were: 13th (played as 4th) Q, 17th (8th) Q, 3rd (12th) Murph, 6th (15th) Kenny.

Aggregate Stableford results were: DM/GM/MO/SS 150, PW/SL/IQ/MH 134, AS/KB/MB/RW 109.

COURSE RECORDS:    Stableford - S.Soutar 43 (prev. NA)

PERSONAL WORST:    Stableford - K.Baxter 20 (= prev.)
HANDICAP WORST:     A.Sawyer 38.8 (prev. 38.3)

The Nancarrow's Cup Final: Scoot d Murph 3 & 2.

Sunday's Ambrose results were: Henry, Scoot, Beardy & Mike net 51 3/8 off 12 5/8. DM/GM/AS/Robbo (filled in for KB) net 54 1/2 off 10 1/2 and RW/SL/MO/IQ net 58 off 10

2013-2014 ROUND SIXSt ANDREWS BEACH - TOOT TOOT, HERE COMES SCOOT!

Probably one of the best selection of courses in a season ever with three of the best in the final weekend. (Well done Glenn!) All were in attendance except for Jimmy the Griff who was unfortunately on special duties in Meetung. Jimmy was replaced by "Wal" Beardmore for the weekend as Robbo apparently had more important golfing commitments.

The stage was set with Glenn some SEVEN (yes seven!!) points clear on top with Gooey second, Scoot a further 3 points adrift in third & Q 4th the only other within 10 points. (all others twenty pts+).

Match play semi finalists were Scoot v Gooey and Murph v Glenn

After 9 holes Glenn was equal 9th with 15 stableford points, Gooey equal 7th with 16, Scoot eq 3rd on 19 and Q 1st with 21. In match play Scoot was 1 up on Gooey & Glenn was 1 up on Murph.

At completion of the round The Scooter came in first with 36 points (19 out & 17 in) with Q (21/14) & Schimma (19/16) equal second/third on 35 points. Glenn & Gooey came home equal 7th with 32 points (15/17 & 16/16). This enabled Scoot to get within 1.5 points of Glenn with Q 5 points  and Gooey 7 points off the pace with a round to go.

Other scores were:

Henry 34 (14/20), Beano 34 (15/19), Fusspot 34 (17/17), Murph 31 (16/15), Beardy 29 (15/14), Kenny29 (13/16) & Mike 27 (17/10).
