ROUND
ONE - 'FOX'POTS OUTSMARTS RIVALS! |
Well we have kicked off the
year by returning to 'The River' the new home of Fusspots who appears to
have been foxing late last year to obviously gain an advantage in his
starting handicap. How else can you explain this hybrid tiger blitzing
the filed to win by 6 points in this stableford round. He still hasn't
learned to look after his handicap though shooting a personal best and
course record 41 points and slashing 3 shots after only the first round. Henry
and Glenn paced themselves well bring home second best points without
losing a shot.... that's how you win Massey's Fussy! At the other end of
the scale Beano struggled 'a bit' with only 18 points blowing out nearly
2 shots and still receiving 3 points.

ROUND
TWO - SCOOT MASTERS CARRINGTON "LAKES" |
It hadn't rained for a month
but the night before this round it did not let up as our intrepid twelve
all turned up, teed off and wondered why the hell did we bother?? For
only the second time in Massey history the round was not completed but
this time it was due to unplayable conditions not lightning. The rain
got heavier as the first group teed off on the ninth hole and by the
time they got on the green it was covered in water. All groups played
out the ninth with the knowledge that this was the minimum required to
play to be considered an official round. As we all gathered under the
cover of the BBQ sheds it was decided that the easiest way to score this
round was to double the nine hole totals and then apply the handicaps.
A much improved Scoot came out on top shooting a very respectable 50
which adjusted to a net 61 as he mounts his tilt at the title. Last
years "Cinderella" story Glenn has got his campaign for back to back to
back to back etc. off to a flying start with another 2nd placing (net
65) to hold a slender 0.5 point lead over Scoot as they both shed
valuable strokes off their respective handicaps. Schimma came in with a
net 69 in third to be within striking distance but the sleeper of the
first two rounds is undoubtedly Henry as he backs up his first up second
with another consistent round (net 70) picking up a first four at his
home track.
Jimmy, The Bean & Gooey battled on well in the conditions and will be
better for the run after carding par 72's. However, our first up winner
could not back it up as he succumbed to the 'water hole' ninth with a
nine to miss out on much needed points and therefore FAILED to
consolidate. Blackbookers note - rule a line through the others on rain
affected tracks as they too struggled with the conditions and you will
not see a 'W' in their form after this effort.

ROUND
THREE - KENNY GOES BACK TO BACK IN
'DEWARS' CLASSIC. |
It was great to see a full
Massey field assemble for the Dewars Classic on this fine Friday
afternoon. Could there be a breakaway at the top of the table or would
the this be a chance for the tail to make up some ground? Overnight
leader Glenn unfortunately, could not consolidate at The Schanck with a
score of only 23 stableford points. Jimmy the Griff and Quinny got off
to flyers in their quest to make up some ground with 24 and 22 points at
the turn only to falter down the home straight but still did enough to
earn some valuable points. But it was the more consistent Kenny
Baxter with a 17 (after 9) and coming home with a 20 that took out his
second Dewars Classic in a row. However, a new name has appeared at the
top of the Massey table in Steven Soutar who did
just enough to take the Massey Lead on 26 points. Topsy turvy results in
this round now sees 14 points 'the field' with 4 rounds still remaining.
The Dewars Team Classic was taken out by Team Kenny/Quinny/Murph/Bean (3
of which trifected the round) by bringing home the Dewars ball and
amassing 37 points. Second was Schimma/Jimmy/Gooey/Mike 32 points then
Henry/Glenn/Fussy/Scoot 20 points (lost ball on 15).
A big Massey thank you to Murph for the use of his Cape Schanck
facilities and to Jimmy for more of the sponsors product!

ROUND
FOUR - HENRY BACK ON TOP OF A BUNCHED FIELD |
Another full field assembled
at Amstel full of expectation in what is heating up as possibly the
closest Massey in history. However, unfortunately the course did not
match expectations with many bare patches on most fairways. Henry
continued his consistent year tying in first place with Gooey who showed
a welcome return to form with net 70's while Murph returned a much
needed net 71 to also bring home double figure points. It wasn't such
good news for the current Massey leader - Scoot who could not
consolidate coming in with a disappointing net 95. A quick look at the
new Massey table shows Henry out in front by three points on 35 from
Fussy 32 with 3 players in equal third place on 28 points. In all there
are 10 players within 12.5 points with three rounds still remaining.
Only Beano 15 points & Mike 15.5 are seemingly out of reach. The latter
sacrificed a nice slide on his handicap after putting his clubs away
following 95 strokes from 15 holes.
The matchplay is also
hotting up with only one round to go before the semi's. Pool A sees
Henry out in front equal on points with Jimmy with only Quinny still
able to reach the finals. Pool B is very close with Fussy defeating Mike
to take top spot and Murph rising from last place to second. Only Kenny
cannot make the finals in this pool with some interesting matches coming
up.

ROUND
FIVE - GOOEY RIGHT AT HOME AT 'ROYAL' CENTENARY
PARK |
Only The Bean was absent
today because for the first time ever the longest Massey season in
history has clashed with the footy season. Even that intrepid Saints
supporter Glenn missed out on the footy in pursuit of back to back
Massey Glory. However, it was Gooey on his home patch at Centenary Park
scoring a PB stableford score of 40 points to make up some ground on the
leaders after missing the first round of competition and in doing so
also booking himself a spot in the matchplay semi's. His opponent for
the day Murph finished 2nd on 36 pts followed by Glenn 35, Jimmy 34 and
Henry, Fussy and Kenny tying on 33 pts. There are still 10 players
within 12 points from the leader with two rounds remaining but Schimma,
Quinny & Scoot will need the seven players ahead of them to literally
fall over to have any chance. While Mike & Beano will battle it out for
the NAGA shirt.
The matchplay semi finalists
have been decided with a host of interesting battles won & lost to
decide the final spots.
