ROUND
ONE -
KOOL HAND KENNY! |
Mild, overcast
conditions saw Kenny get off to a similar start to last year with a
runaway win by shooting a Massey record equalling 46 stableford points.
Putting his driver away after 9 holes and teeing off consistantly with
an iron he amassed 28 points on the back nine (only one hole did not
score at least 3 or 4 points!) He was followed home by the
pre-season favourite Glenn who cruised home with a very respectable 41
points in second with the evergreen Jimmy third with 37. Last years
winner Henry got off to a shaky start but in so doing got his handicap
back out to 5 with 28 points in last place.
Meanwhile our two Nancarrow's cup finalists both won their opening
rounds with Gooey no match for the rampaging Kenny and the Bean
finishing 1 up on Jimmy in a close one.

ROUND
TWO -
MURPH CONQUERS & KENNY
CONSOLIDATES! |
Cool, sunny with a strong
southerly breeze and four of the 10 man field recorded sub par rounds
but it was Murph with a net 67 thanks to a brilliant 37 strokes over the
back nine to record his first round victory since round 2 of the
2005-2006 season. While Kenny consolidated his place at the top of the
Massey table with a solid 69 to take home another 11 points. Equal third
for the day was Schimma and Glenn with 72's placing the "Cinderella Man"
in a handy second place for his tilt at the long awaited prize.
Meanwhile at the rear of the table with only 6 points accumulated so far
is the "Tiger" of the Massey in his worst start to a season since his
debut of 87/88 where he was unable to play to the max. 35 handicap when
he racked up 119 shots. He then became the first player allowed above
the 35 maximum..... go figure!!! Later that year he shocked us all with
a sign of things to come shooting a net 54 following an 86 off the
stick.
The match play is hotting up with our two Nancarrow's cup finalists both
still undefeated with the much awaited Grand Final replay coming up
next.

ROUND
THREE -
IT'S BEAN SPECIAL! |
Cool, damp conditions with
some rain during the first three holes saw low scores with six of the
nine man field carding under par results with many hand brakes and
anchors put to desperate use. However it was The Bean who said catch me
if you can during a solid compilation consisting of 45 strokes on the
front and easing down at the line with a fine 49 to finish in front with
a comfortable net 63 to keep him still within sight of the overall
leaders with four rounds remaining. Schimma constructed a pair of sub
40's to also keep within reach with a net 65 tying equal 2nd for the day
with the Massey leaders Kenny and Glenn who have thrown out the
challenge resulting in 33 and 30.5 points respectively out of a possible
36 to date......
At the tail of the field with respectable net 72's was Jimmy & Henry
with the latter finishing last on his home track and mustering only 10.5
points for his three rounds to date!

FOUR -
JUGGERNAUT ON THE LOSE! |
Somebody stop him!!!...Yes
Kenny did it again shooting a massive 44 stableford points to finish one
point ahead of Jimmy with Scoot a further 3 points adrift coming in
third. The win catapult him from a previous 2.5 points to a 9.5 point
lead over Glenn who could only muster 30 stableford points to finish 8th
on the day. K.B has amassed 45 massey points from a possible 48 and it
seems he has room to move in his new handicap of 30.4. However, there
are huge obstacles ahead for him at Moonah Legends and The Dunes on the
final weekend.... Four players broke the previous course stableford
record of 36 points on what appeared to be challenging windy conditions.
The Dewars Classic was also
run and won by a group that produced three of the four best scores of
the day. Yes, Kenny also landed his first Dewars Classic outright and
team victory when he combined with Jimmy (also his first Dewars team
win), Quinny (6th) and Glenn (4th win) to bring Dewars ball home and
produce a record 39 team points. Second was the group of Schimma,
Fusspot, Beano and Scoot with 34 points (lost ball on 17) while the
others lost the ball on the 11th hole after scoring 23 points.

ROUND
FIVE -
HE CANT BE BEAT ! |
On a windy smokey Friday
evening at Flinders Mike finally came to play but probably wasted a near
perfect round by shooting a Massey equalling record of 46 stableford
points and rocketing himself from last to second last while trimming
five shots from his handicap. Fusspot carded a respectable 36 points to
come in second while Kenny compiled enough (35 pts) to pick up 3rd place
- his worst finish this year (are some cracks starting to show?).....
Wishful thinking I would suggest - more like Mr Baxter new exactly what
he wanted to score today - one over par and an extra shot on his
handicap to boot! He is far enough in the lead to not play at Moonah
Legends and still take a lead into the last round.
A check of the Honour Roll tells us that he still requires another 18
points to beat the previous best final score of 72.5 points set by Murph
in 1999 - 2000 (also over 7 rounds).... Come on KB the challenge is
there.
The matchplay semi finalists are set with only Beano returning from last
years finals to defend his crown. Kenny was knocked out in a do or die
battle with Fusspot with the winner taking top spot and the loser out of
the semi's. This match went to the last hole with Fussy winning 2 up.
Glenn (also 2up over Schimma) & Murph (5 & 4 over Scoot) rounded out the
top two of Pool A also with must wins to secure their place in the
semi's.

ROUND
SIX -
THE DOOR IS AJAR!
|
Kenny has a commanding 13
point lead going into the penultimate round at magnificent Moonah Links
Legends course. The gladiators gradually assemble at the putting green
after alighting their belongings at Scoot's Blairgowrie palace. Eagerly
awaiting the arrival of the one "who caint be beat" he doesn't let us
down by showing up after an all night party (with himself) seemingly
oblivious to what lay ahead.
At the end of proceedings
Gooey & Beano tied for first with a pair of net 66's with I.Q in third
place on 68 and lucky Glenn in fourth with a 75. While our glorious
leader came home with a net 83 to finish with 4 points thanks largely to
Murph who did not finish after wiping the 15th & 16th where he
surrendered the lead in his semi final match against Fussy.
Therefore the standings going into the final round at The Dunes at
12.00pm tomorrow is Kenny on 59 points with Glenn & Quinny now within
reach on 51 points a piece and forget the rest.
The matchplay semi finals were both exciting finishes with Fusspot
knocking Murph out 2 and 1 with both combatants doing very well keeping
their emotions intact - well battled guys. The other semi saw last years
winner Bean on track to defend his title with a hard fought 1 up win
over Glenn who has bigger things in his sights.

Group 3 - Mike, Scoot, matchplay finalists Fussy & Bean. |
|
FINAL - WOW WEE!!! |
Still holding an 8 point
lead over Glenn & Quinny, Kenny remained the most likely winner on
Friday night after a tantalising BBQ at Scoot's amongst cries of "If it
bleeds you can kill it" ringing out. This was followed by yet another
near all night session between KB, Quinny & The Bean that would set up
what would be a very testing time on the final 18 holes (or 19?) while
Glenn "slinked" off to bed much earlier in what could prove to be a very
smart move indeed!
The half way mark, saw Glenn with a below average 47 shots, Quinny 50
and Kenny shooting a 57 which included a 13 on the par 3 3rd hole
setting up an interesting finish. Other halfway scores were Mike 61,
Fussy 60, Jimmy 54, Bean 51, Gooey 46, Schimma 46, Murph 42, Henry 40 &
Scoot 48. The back nine was a struggle for most following the previous
nights shinannagan's seeing all retreating group by group back to
Scoot's without knowing who had scored what - even though there was a
funny feeling that we may have to go beyond 18 holes to decide the
winner.
The warriors gathered back at the palace where the scores were tallied.
The back nine scores were as follows - Mike 55/total 116 (net 94), Fussy
51/111 (85), Gooey 46/99 (80), Jimmy 54/101 (78), Bean 52/103 (77),
Murph 47/89 (76), Henry 42/82 (75), Schimma 36/82 (71), Scoot 58/106 (a
personal best 61), Quinny could only manage another 50 for a net 76 for
equal 5th and 7.5 points four shots adrift from Glenn who rattled home
with a 42 for net 72 to finish third and 10 points, while Kenny (the one
who caint beat) shot 57 for a net 88 collecting only 2 points and
amazingly tying for first overall with Glenn on 61 Massey points.
A sudden death playoff hole is required - so a quick phone call was made
to The Dunes pro shop early on Sunday morning where permission was
granted for the two to play the 18th hole again - as long as we were
there before the first group came through. So off we went were a cart
was hastily provided with chauffer to transport our gladiators to the
tee with only 'driver' and ball in hand. That's right, Kenny had no time
to think and recall that all year he had been teeing off with an iron
and consequently schanked his tee shot. Glenn on the other hand placed
one straight down the middle to go on and win the hole and his maiden
Massey title after seven runner ups. Kenny was left wondering what to
tell his adoring family and what was he going to do with that space on
the mantle that he had cleared since round one.
The Nancarrows Cup matchplay final
was once again taken out by the mighty Bean after being 4 up over the
first 5 holes Fussy fought back bravely eventually going down 2 & 1.
