FIRST EVER PLAY-OFF FOR
MASSEY GLORY
The leader board
changed throughout this topsy turvy season as Kenny eventually broke away for
a slender three point lead over Glenn going into the final round with some
fine form and new found confidence. Unfortunately for Kenny he slipped and
injured his ankle while fishing during a work junket in Tassie just prior to
the Yarrawonga weekend.
The scene was set as it
came down to the wire with Kenny trying to preserve his ankle by hiring a
buggy only managing net 96 (120 strokes) and tie for the lead with a fast
finishing Dave Murphy 76 (98) and the persistent Glenn Martin 78 (96).
Not just a two-way but
a three way 18 hole play-off was required to find the Massey champion after
five players finished within one point after the final hole on the Murray
course. In fact had Mark West dropped a relatively easy putt on the last he
would have replaced Glenn in the play-off. With Beano missing by a mere 0.5
point.
MURPH IN A CANTER
The 18 hole play-off
took place on the Sunday on the Lakes course with a hapless but courageous
Kenny left lamenting - having to withdraw after nine painful holes.
Murph, who
had come from five points in arrears on the Saturday to make the play-off,
started to choke around the half way mark but after an out of character nerve
settling "Neville Wran" - proved too good in the finish to
record a hard fought victory over the tiring Glenn Martin. (Somebody take that
bloody chicken schnitzel from the menu for Glenn's sake!)
MR INCONSISTENT
Michael Hall had an up
and down year to equal Ian Quinton's record of three wins in a season but like
Quinny before him was too inconsistent to be considered a threat.
